Just been thinking...
what do you do if a dog starts chasing you when you're out riding...

weve had some near misses with dogs up on the moors but thankfully the owners caught them quickly and we used schooling whip to *try*(didnt work too well...) to keep them away...

so if a dog chases you...

should you try and get away...or stay still

Every one of our horses is taught from an early stage to chase a dog..
If one barks at them we instantly turn and ride straight for it, unless the owner is there and grabs it!
The only time this didn't work was when a huge GSD jumped onto the neck of the horse I was riding bareback in a bridle back to the field , as a just broken four year old it took off like a rocket, I eventually slid off and hung on getting trampled and knocked unconcious. I remember coming round to see two huge amber eyes and a lot of snarling teeth stood over me, whilst the dog's drunk owner danced up and down on the bank screaming obscenities at me.. At the hospital many people came to view the perfect hoof prints all over my tummy.
Apart from that dog every dog i've met has backed off when you ride towards it purposefully, they really don't appreciate you trotting at them at all..

I had one of those huge Newfoundlands have a go at me and Will once, the bloody thing was level with my knee! Fraid I just screamed at the bugger and it sloped off, Willow's used to me yelling at people, been round me and OH too long......

Well we got attacked by a dog on a fun ride, so we galloped off as fast as we could. It gave up quite quickly but we were lucky we were in a spot where we could gallop off, don't know what it would be like if you couldn't

I suppose you need to read the situation at the time.
When I ride on the beach we quite often get Dogs coming over and woofing like crazy. I tend to keep still until the owner catches up with the dog. I have found if we keep moving we just are a more interesting toy to play with.
If (It hasn't happened as yet) I felt we were going to be attacked, I think I would just have to make a quick decision and hope my horse kicks it one right in the moosh.

We were out with a pair once, going down a bridle way we went past a muzzled alsation that the lady was just managing to contain. We carried on our way and turned round to go back down the bridleway, and a few hundred meter down we saw the alsation galloping toward us, out of contol and muzzle-less. We couln't turn round, there not enough space for a pair witha carriage to turn so we had to stop. Luckily the ponies are used to dog due to the carriage dogs, and stood there as good as gold, and the alsation stopped about 10 meters infront of us, followed by a frantic own and when called he went back.

That is what I do. Most dogs I have found have ran off with a huge cob trotting at them. What annoys me is the collies at work rush into the school as you canter past, works horses are used to it but my boy took off the first time, I locked dogs in the stable for the rest of the session.

my horse hates dogs with a passion - if one comes into the field he will make a beeline for it - v aggressively - and literally try to pounce on it with his front legs. kicks at them if they come near wen riding too - so am thinking if a horrible dog were to attack us he would probably attack it rite back or at least kick it in the chops / chase it away... needless to say we arnt very popular with the hunt master....... lol

Oscar goes for dogs with his teeth! it's really scary, there are loads of dogs on the yard (they follow you around) and you really have to hold on tight when you're leading him or he'll chase the doggy!

I was out road hacking and just 1/2 mile to go when a dog ran out of a house and started nipping at Super back legs. I shouted at the dog even started barking at it! But it made no difference to the stupid thing! Super was getting a little upset over it and was trying to defend herself but in true ID fashion not trying to unseat me at the same time! She was more hopping on her back legs than bucking - poor thing, I wish she would just kick out and send that dog flying but she didn't! I trotted off in the hope the dog would give up but it just gave chase and finally I rounded a corner onto a busier road and the dog gave up as it was frightened of the traffic.

Now when I meet dogs and they go for Super I just turn and face them and trot straight at them. Super's not afraid of them and knows what I'm up to and will gladly comply with my request to run the dog down! The dogs normally turns and runs back to where they came from and try to be brave behind a hedge. I haven't run a dog over....yet. People might find it cruel, but it's effective and saves me having a dog nipping at my horse's legs!

i have always been told if a dog looks like it is going to chase you do not turn away just keep going
as if you turn away it will make the dog chase you more
true or not i dont know?

I've had a couple of dogs chase me over the years; every time I have turned the horse around quickly and chased the dog away! It's always worked and the dogs ran off with their tails between their legs.

At my last yard the YO kept several german shepherds, one was chained up to a kennel at the side of the house, would bark at the horses as they pass. Had Mae and Mia out in the paddock for a while (they were heavily pregnant at the time).

Next thing i hear barking, so come out of stable i was cleaning. The german shepherd had broke its collar and was barking at the horses back legs trying to bite. Next thing Mae kicks out and dog goes flying, honestly thought she had killed it, but stupid dog gets up and goes back for more. Just to be sent flying again. This time injured it sulks off.

Mae now goes for dogs, shes gone out of her way to stand on ones!

I was always told to run right at it and it should scare it off! However Im not brave enough to risk my horses legs thanks! I tend to yell at it (most farm dogs respond to that), if not then Id flippin' leg it!

Had a little dog get too close to one of mine while I was leading him - he kicked the sh*t out of it. It didnt actually attack my horse but was barking and jumping about round him so my horse took it as threatening. The dog was ok though - we were on their property (training)!

I turn the horse to face the dog, and then call out 'No' in a commanding tone - usually seems to stop them in their tracks

. I find the worst thing is to try and run away from them as it triggers their chasing instinct.

Ellie is fabulous with dogs out on a hck and we meet dozens of them on every ride so I suppose it is a good job.

I tend to make her stand still until the owner catches it. I have to say most dog owners around here are very good and will fasten their dog back on the lead as soon as they see you. On one occasion we were 'attacked' by a spaniel and a mongrel. They were running in and out of her fet and barking and snapping and Ellie just stood there like "yer right!"

However let a dog come near her tea and she rears up and pounces on them

We had a very near miss with a jack russell once!

I have never been chased by a dog, but frequently come across them when I'm out hacking. In most cases there's never a problem. If the dog does come bounding over I just greet it in a normal fashion. They either go away again, or we wait for the owner to come and collect it up and stick it back on it's lead. In most cases I stop and standstill.

Only on one ocassion has it been a major problem, and I'm afraid the dog was killed outright. It insisted that Amy's legs were for chomping on - she thought otherwise. One kick, lights out......

Not sure really.

But if said dog would not keep away from my two then i'm afraid they probably would boot it one.

They can handle OH's dog following them around as i make sure he stays a safe distance away but if a dog were to get under their feet and they got the ok from me i know without a doubt they would trample it or try to!

It depends on the situation and the dog........unfortunately my horse is excellent with dogs, so I really don't think he'd ever kick them, even if they're snapping at him.
But saying that, he's very fast, so would fancy our chances if we tried to get away.

But the norm is that he'll stand still whilst I scream blue murder at the owner and threaten to get off my horse and beat the dog myself ........big bug bear is people who can't control their dogs. Our hacking is clearly signposted as bridlepaths, if the dogs can't be trusted around horses, they should be on leads or not there at all, end of story.

Two weeks ago we were chased - whilst out with a friend and her youngster - four times by the same dog in the space of an hour. By the time I'd finished screaming at the owner, I'd nearly lost my voice I was so bloody angry.
