If a lost/abandoned animal was adopted (through a rescue group and with paperwork signed) and the previous owner comes forward afterwards

I probably didn’t clarify I meant like paying every day cost for a few months, getting new equipment, vet visits. Imagine spending years paying for everything and then to have a give the dog back to the original owner as dog are expensive you could be down thousands. Yeah the last dog I bought was 2012 still going strong and acting like a 4 year old probably not the best breed dog as he was a cross breed. The adoption fee isn’t actually bad.

If expense is such an important factor, rather than the emotional impact of having to give a dog back, maybe wait until you have a bit more money behind you, before getting another dog?

The previous owners would need legal proof of ownership to reclaim the dog, like the microchip being registered to them, pedigree or registration where applicable (also tied to microchip) or registered to a vet. Why it's important to have all these things sorted and to know exactly where the dog's chip is and check it every so often in case it moves.

I get ours checked for position when they have their yearly checkups. We had a cat years ago whose chip had moved down his leg.

I had one chipped and 3 weeks later when we tried to program the cat door it couldn't find it. The vet did another for free. If we hadn't had chip activated cat flaps we would never have known.

I would recommend everyone does this. When Zenya went for hip x rays they couldn't find her chip. I knew she had been done so they had a really good search and it had migrated to the bottom of her chest, just behind her elbow. This is why I wish we still had tattooing, the tattoo is always visible - I know there are stories of dogs with ears cut off but I reckon that is far less likely than a microchip moving.

The dog was a puppy that had an issue, incontinant and something else with its back end. She couldn’t afford the costs of an operation and treatment and had decided with the vet/rescue she would pts as the best option. The rescue had her sign it over and then she left.

The rescue then did the treatment and rehomed the dog.

I'm glad the puppy had the chance of health and a life, which it didn't have with the owner.

I don't know why she involved a rescue when she wanted the puppy pts.

Morally questionable!

I would just hope the pup did have a good quality of life after treatment, imo some rescues spend far too much on treating dogs with multiple health issues who will never have a normal life .

So now we've heard the woman's version. What have the rescue said?

Could somebody link to the page on Facebook, please.

Apparently the dog is fine. The euthanasia recommendation was based on an incorrect diagnosis it turned out. It seems like a very rare and very complicated situation. Will try to re-find the post. Was last week!

I have to admit when I even think of someone keeping one of my dogs/family members if I lost them for whatever reason couldn't find them back (migrated microchip, etc), I feel such a murderous rage towards this hypothetical person in this hypothetical situation that I think they would probably give me my dog back as I'm not sure there is much that would stop me keeping on trying. Of course, I suppose I can't have my dogs in prison ....

When I lost a dog on a mountain, it did occur to me that someone could have seen her, thought, "This is a nice dog," not scanned her for a chip or made an effort to find her owner or anything, and kept her.

But I'd spammed the hell out of social media, whilst police, the Mountain Rescue team for that area, and local shelters were all notified, and I got the dog back.

Anyone who wasn't a complete twally and scanned the microchip would have known it was owned by someone.

You seem weirdly concerned about money.
If someone turned up and claimed my rescue was their dog, my last thought would be about the money she'd cost me! I'd be absolutely devastated I'd lost my best mate. I have zero concern this will actually happen though.
Why are you so focused on the cost of this potential dog?

I think that it’s fair enough to consider the monetary investment in an animal as well as the emotional investment 🤷‍♀️.

Take on from unregulated rescue, spend £££s getting the animal healthy, neutered and vaccinated, and the old owner rocks up to claim back the animal which is now in a much better state than hitherto.
