Maybe but for those that do breed & MC then new owners wont be getting away with it so easy, not if they have to sign over in the same way you do a car. So long as it becomes illegal to sell on without doing a transfer then the future should be a lot better for horses. No horse should be bred without being registered, that should be a thing of the past, hopefully!!
unfortunately, there is no way of keeping on top of microchipping unless new owners can be fined for buying a horse that is not microchipped, this way the horses will be difficult to sell on as no purchaser will risk being fined for buying a horses that is not microchipped
Just read the article its totally discusting how anyone could treat an animal in this way, it makes my blood boil, there is just no need for it these days
It really doesn't matter if its compulsory. Here in France it is compulsory to m/chip newborns and all imported horses - but no-one checks.
It is also compulsory to register all horses with French National Stud but I know of a fair few horses who have not been registered.
My business in France has been inspected by both Ministry of Agriculture and the Dept. of Youth and Sport who licence me. Neither dept. has ever asked to see my horses paperwork or checked to see if they are microchipped.
On one of the Equine websites in France, Brits returning to the UK with a horse actually said, they had discovered they could not take this equine back to UK without a passport. So this horse had no passport, m/chip and was not registered with national stud.
When microchips are correctly implanted into a horse they will not migrate-they are placed deep into the nuchal ligament (ligament that runs along the top of the neck). The microchips, however, are not infalible and can fail as well as not all readers being able to correctly scan all micorchips!! Both major flaws in microchipping but it is what happens when many companies make a similar product!
Microchips inplanted in cats/dogs are placed deep under the skin, they are designed to adhere to the tissue above the shoulder blades, but rarely do -so can migrate around the body, anywhere under the skin!
The microchipping of horses will only work if every vet checks the passport and id at every vaccination and with random police checks on yards/when travelling/at competitions- but who on earth is going to bother paying for that to be done!!!
