If he doesn't cope without shoes?

Oh no :( now I'm freaking out again :( thanks cpt, at least now I know worse case scenario which is what I was after. It definately gives me a lot of cause for concern :(

I had a very brief look, thinking the same thing - can't find the video, but the actual website talks about minimal trimming of the sole, so don't think it's the same as Strasser....I'll go back and see if I can find the vids

Swedish Hoof School is nothing like Strasser. The videos the poster is mentioning are videos showing the effect of shoes on hooves, using cadaver hooves. Maybe or maybe not scientifically valid, but nothing to do with carving up live hooves. Best follow link before commenting on it ;)

As I said - I had thought the same - but also stated that I had looked at the site and didn't think it looked anything like Strasser......best read my comments properly before criticising. ;)

CPT it's actually a good site - just seen a couple of the vids about difference in shockwaves between shod and unshod horses and the part about trimming is good. No blood involved!!

Ok, sorry I was too scared to look at it, I hate that Strasser stuff and she is a Swedish vet.

I thought you were after the full story E. I didn't want to scare you but barefoot is really gaining numbers now and I do think that we are getting to a point, in fact I've seen a case very recently on a forum I will no longer use, where one-horse owners, whose own horse can have the most dreadful feet and not even be sound, are giving advice to others. And for very thin soled horses there really are risks and the average person will need veterinary support if only because doing one on your own is, as I know from experience, very nerve wracking.

If your horse can wear boots all the time when turned out, then I would try it. If he can't then I would try a change of diet first, possibly shoeing with pads for a cycle to ensure maximum sole thickness when the shoes come off.

I hope it all works out.
 
Thanks CPT I did - still scared by it tho! I'm planning to boot his foot that is currently bare which I reckon we will struggle to get a shoe onto anyway and if that seems ok in a boot i will ask farrier to remove other front shoe as well. Not yet decided whether to remove backs at the same time - i don't anticipate they will be so difficult but don't want to overwhelm him poor boy.

Really appreciate all the advice and offers of help everyone :) will update on how we get on x
 
No that doesn't sound weird at all :)

Not only that, but it sounds like they'll fit in my Trails :D Now, we just need to find you some pads...

My pal (Skippy's Mum) has the Trails on loan at the moment, and she and her ponio are at Ingliston on Sunday so I can get them from her then.

ETA - the hardest bit to measure is the length, because esp with horses who have not got the best feet, the toes are long and the heels are underrun, so it's hard to work out where the heel ends. The diagram here shows what you're aiming for... http://www.hoofbootique.co.uk/help/how-to-measure

I would have said here : http://www.j-aferrie.com/product.php?prod_id=161&cat_id=72&page=1 but they don't seem to have the pads for the Cavallos and they only open weekdays. I will ask Skippy'sMum if she has a spare pair. Otherwise, we can think of alteratives maybe. It might be you have to use a nappy in the boot until you can order some pads in.

Well I'll order these and see what I can come up with to make do until they arrive. Tonight he has cotton wool, a nappy and the foam that it supposed to go under his bandages... poor guy is about three foot off the ground :D
 
Camping mat will do for tomorrow. Cheap one is a fiver in yeomans. Double it up.

Poundland also sell neoprene laptop cases that will work short term.


Cut to fit, of course :D

Just wanted to say good luck with its seems so scary at first but it gets easier as you see change and understand more.
 
I forgot about the camping mats! I've used them before, and kiddies playmats :)

Emilieu, get hold of something and a pair of scissors (in fact, you can probably make a few pads tomorrow out of something and stick 'em on with duck tape).

I will pick up the Trails on Sunday and drop them over to your yard - they are size sevens which are supposed to do width 135-140mm and length
140-145mm - so may be a bit short, but keep your fingers crossed. I will text once I've got hold of them.

They'll be clumpy and not the best fit but if they mean he's more comfy until you can work out the best type and fit for him, they'll do the trick :D
 
He has a ducked taped fibre gee bootie tonight. Might have a play around with different things tomorrow and see what makes him comfiest. Have ordered the pads and will get in touch with the hoof boutique lady over the weekend.

Little update! In true deano style we are now down to two shoes, got him in yesterday to find he's thrown one of his back shoes as well now - sigh. Still he was comfy overnight on a deep bed and this morning we had a bit of a wander around in brightbays trails (well in one of them!) In the boots he seems quite comfortable and the only downside is that ten minutes of supervised play clearly indicates the boots wont stay on for turnout (dont worry Brightbay I rescued them intact...!) So I will just need to hope that he stays comfortable in the field and boot him for the paths and roads. Hopefully our pads will arrive tomorrow.
 
For turnout you might be better off with Cavallo Simples (if they fit). I've had a few reports of Trails being stepped off because of the rear fastening.
 
Yes the cavallos are really good for turnout, my boy was in them for nearly 3 months and he really tested them to the limits, he got shoes off frequently but only got a boot off once!
