we have been thinking for a while about this to pay for my horse while he is away at boarding school.
i dont know anyone who does it..
how much could i charge? .. we have 2 acres and 2 stables, and a field shelter.
do i include hay and shavings in with that?
what about insurance tax etc?
any help greatly appreciated! thanks

I would tend to go for as much income as you can, if it suits you, where I am now the farmer keeps an eye on my boy, they are all checked over every day, turns in out and in winter, checks them at 11.00 pm and any time I ask he will help out.
He puts up the haynets [this saves wastage]
I pay £20 per week for the grazing
£10 per week for his stable
£10 per week for forage or £1.00 per haynet.
As you have only two stables I would go for two friends [saves on hassle and they can help each other out]. It is a major bonus if you can get a mother and child.

Around here it is about £30 per week for DIY. This includes stable, grazing, field poo picked, use of school, storage. Feed and bedding is not included. Services can be paid for at an approx rate of £1 for each turn out, each catch in, each rug change, £3 for attending for vet or blacksmith,50p for putting a feed in or giving a hay net.

We're a yard of 21 (inc. owner's 3 horses) We pay £27.50 per week for good grazing/fencing, a stable, canteen (loo plus sitting area, fridge, hot water), water, electricity, use of outdoor school, hacking on 100 acre farm with bridleways off, show-jump paddock with full set of jumps, home-made forage/straw delivered to your pallet at cost price and half price on the XC course. I'm in North Oxfordshire.

Good luck with your venture - there are many who would welcome a small yard/field to themselves!

Please forgive me, but you will word your ad. with capitals, correct punctuation etc., won't you? I know many here will shout me down and say it doesn't matter, but...:)

look imto the commercial insurance and 3 c care, your rates, your business water and electric. then work out what is a reasonable charge per week. your nice private set up is/could be about to enter the lurky area of a livery yard.
