Just when I think I have sorted out some acceptable feed for Hermosa, Fin gets the issue.

Hermosa is now on a small scoop of Saracens Re-Leve mix + a small scoop of chaff, which happens to be Honeychop Lite at the moment.

Fin is on a larger scoop of just chaff.

I wet both their feeds.

The other week, he started coughing during exercise. Unusual for him. Our hay is dry, but he hasn't had an issue before. I realized I had finished my bag of Thunderbrooks chaff and switched him to the Honeychop. As an experiment, I cut the chaff and gave him his supplements in pony nuts (which I normally reserve for bribe purposes). Within a couple days, he'd stopped coughing. Okay, it was probably the Honeychop, which is a very dry chaff.

I don't want to go back to the Thunderbrooks because their CEO is a little bit evil. Don't want any alfafa-based chaff because it makes him nuts. Obviously needs to be of similar consistency to Thunderbrooks and I guess not oat straw. Any recommendations? Urgh.
 
There’s a lot of grass chaff’s now but obv starch/sugar will be higher than honeychop (agrobs is obv best TB replacement option)
I think of the big guns d+h just grass is still the best option
 
Simple Systems? They do non alfalfa based chaff and are a geniunely lovely company with great customer service.

I've just gone back to SS from Thunderbrooks and more recently Pure feeds.
 
Dengie meadow grass has the seal of approval from the microcob (& she has breathing problems). She doesn't get much because she only has to look at Spring grass to balloon. No coughing or wheezing.

I've never tried SS chaff but they deliver my grass pellets and sainfoin bricks and I've been pleased with both of them.

I've used Pure feeds in the past and all the horses did well on it.
 
Dengie ulsa lite is good, it does contain a few alfalfa pellets but not many. I’ve got a horse sensitive to alfalfa (skin rather than behavioural) and I’ve noticed no difference in his skin.
 
For fussy horses then Dengie meadow grass with herbs is quite tasty. I feed Grasstatic but it's to stretch the Agrobs musli a bit, fussy tb wouldn't be as enthusiastic if it was on its own.
 
All the Pure Feeds ones contain oat straw, which seems to be the issue.

Dengie and Simple Systems will probably work. The local feed shop sometimes have Dengie Meadow Grass. Not reliably, though. The Thunderbrooks grass chaff was fine, but I feel bad supporting their sex pest CEO.

Fin has hardly coughed since I stopped feeding him the Honeychop, and he schooled yesterday, mostly at trot and canter, and he did a fast hack today.
 
Would some plain grass nuts soaked be acceptable instead of chaff? It is what I feed as Woody had diastemas when I first got him. They only need to be soaked for ten minutes.
 
I switched from Thunderbrooks for the same reason and now use Northern Crop Driers Graze On. Both horses seem to like it and my local feed supplier stocks it so win/win.

I feed grass chaff either graze on or emerald grass tastic fussy Arabi likes it
 
I am feeding the Dengie Meadow Grass as I have never fed conventional chaff and I really rate it 👍. The TopChop Grass is similar, but without the addition of some grass pellets.

If it works, then maybe liaise with the feedshop to get a bag every so many weeks, they obviously can get it so giving them a bit of notice so they can have it ready for you might work.

I feed Grasstastic because it cheaper and mixed with other things but to feed on it's own, the Meadow grass with herbs wins for palatability with my fussy boy.
 
Currently trying them on Dengie Pure Grass. Because it was the only grass chaff the feed shop had due to the grass chaff shortage.

Hermosa eats it when mixed with the Saracen Re-leve. So long as Fin doesn't cough on it, I'm happy.
