If living out 24/7 should head be left unclipped??

Well, I wouldn't clip it. I hate those hoods you put on their heads, I think they are dangerous, and think it a bit unfair to remove their natural protection.

I personaly wouldn't, have done half, but never full if living out. Horses loose a lot of heat through their head just like humans and the hair provides some insulation. Imagine how much warmer you are with a hat on :-) and as above, not a fan of the hoods for horses living out, too risky imo

I have a tb x cb mare and shes live out for the past 4 years this is the first year shes been in in the winter and ive always clipt her with a full hunter clip as i think the rugs and all the other gear that is in the market these days were able to keep our horses warm enough even when clipt out

Nope, my tb mare lives out and I wouldn't clip. Don't like to over rug and belly too exposed when clipped.

Also want to hold body warmth through the head, she is very beardy too but warmth/protection over looks for me.

If she's beardy, just take her chin off! Easy.

Depends what clip I do - I wouldn't really full clip one living out unless it was really hariy and overweight, and still sweating. I'd do a max of a blanket clip and leave the face on from the bridle forwards.

Rugs are great for keeping them warm, but can rub much easier on something living out 24/7 with all the hair taken off (because they're always in the same rugs..).

I've had horses living out 24/7, still have one living out who's clipped, she has a blanket clip with half head off, and she's fine! Then again, she is a got horse and gallops round the field for fun! :D

I guess i'm a bit different as i don't compete mine and hack out with some light schooling but he's out 24/7, a warmblood and i don't clip him. Looks cute at first esp with his colour i think he's a slightly gingery mammoth but it keep him well and warm so i don't mind. The only ibts i trim are places like under chin etc for tacking up.

I half clip my NF face he grows very thick fur and gets very hot and sweaty, his head collars and bridles get very tight he face get so furry. I would not full clip his face though as I think the top part of their heads is more exposed to the rain and snow.

He does not wear any face hood thing and lives out and I do not clipped him beyond mid november so his face hair grows back quite a bit normally before the worst of the weather.

He has a neck bib and belly clip and lives out 24/7 in a very sheltered field which has a small woods in it. He is rugged appropriately and is the sort of pony who gets hot&fat easily.
