as title really... thinking about buying a mare that has been bred from before she is not old so will hopefully have ridden career first (she should be good eventer) but would like to breed in future from her current owner told me she was stitched after tearing during foaling and was wondering how this will affect if at all, will it affect her ability to concieve, be covered naturally, future foaling.

many thanks

we had a mare who has a caslick done and she had to be opened and restitched again after natural cover and then opened about a month before her foaling date.

was a bit of a faff but not a problem if you have a decent repro vet used to doing it.

word of warning though, my friend bought a mare who was stitched after tearing during foaling and the vet had either done a poor job or not washed out properly before stitching as when she went for scanning she was full of fluid and infection.

perhaps get a breeding examination done before purchasing to ensure all is ok?

I had a mare that had a 3rd degree perinaeal tear. She went to Leahurst to have it repaired (shelf, anus and vulva repaired) at great expense. Although everything looked greatly improved from the outside she did have a persistent fistula which would not heal over making her unsuitable to breed from. We have left her alone for over a year now and will shortly have the vet have another look to see if things have improved/got worse/stayed the same (I am desperate for it to have improved)!
What I am trying to get at is unless you have a vet do a proper breeding exam you will not know the extent of the damage just by looking at the outside.
