Let's talk about border collies.

There seems to be lots that are bot KC registered but are ISDS or something like that?? Can anyone explain?

Is it okay to get a NON KC border collie?

I wouldn’t even consider a KC reg border collie. Our working collies are all ISDS reg or non registered but out of generations of livestock working dogs.

Well that's interesting.

Is it that the KC ones don't have the required working drive?
Yes. KC reg tend to be either show line (with little working drive/instinct) or dual registered which are often from generations of sports dogs so agility/flyball etc.
To register a litter with ISDS both parents must be ISDS reg themselves and I believe KC will register pups out of ISDS dogs as well as KC registered. When looking for a new working sheepdog pup we look to parents/grandparents etc that are already working well in a variety of situations (not just sheepdog trials) but ideally also on the hill, in pens etc.

Yes they do. My younger bitch is ISDS and also registered with KC as they recognise the ISDS registration. My older girl's parents were bought from farms and she has good sheep instinct but is only on the KC Activity register so she can compete in agility.

Why are they generally cheaper than springers?

Just saw a litter of springers with a Will Clulee heritage, 1 is the spit of Mitch. *broody*
How much is an average springer from working lines compared to show? I’d imagine there be a big disparity. Farm/working bred border collies used to be around £200-£400 pre Covid but are now anywhere from £500 upwards. Show lines I’d imagine are more in-line with other pedigree breeds so £1000-2000.
Traditionally it would have been sheep farmers and shepherds breeding and buying and a shepherd’s wage has never been huge so a puppy price would reflect that. Also there’s a huge difference in buying a pup, even from many working generations, than a fully trained dog (which nowadays can command a huge price) because you’ll never know until it’s older and started training as to whether the pup will be a good worker or suit your sheep/ground so it’s a gamble.
With sheepdog trialling becoming a popular sport among hobbyists as well as traditional farmers/shepherds prices of pups and trained dogs have increased massively.

I believe they can be ISDS registered on merit but its a lot of work and testing, only one of ours is ISDS registered, all have come from either our own breeding or from lines we know well and have we have worked with parents and possibly grandparents.

Yes older dogs (over two years of age) and with a clear eye test can be registered with ISDS on merit and while the test itself is straightforward it costs £500. We have been asked to register our beardiexborders on merit by a farmer who trials and wants to use our dogs (as it makes any pups more attractive to buyers who want to trial), but the large fee is a bit offputting.

My 2 were £700 each, lots of champions in their pedigree, especially on mum’s side.

An average price is £200-300 more than the border collie ads I saw on EP’s link .
I’m actually surprised well bred springers are so reasonably priced. Interesting. Thanks.

I saw another litter today, not one that would remotely interest me and the price is an eyewatering £2k. The pups I like are 'only' £800 and in my opinion worth it.

There is a litter of working line Labradors that I'd love a pup from if it was not for my health. Both parents are hip scored and health tested with good pedigrees.

Originally they were £1000, but the 2 remaining are now 3 months old are only £550. I have no idea why they have not sold when other Labs are selling for more and have no or few tests done. Maybe it's colour as the others are mainly brown or yellow.

I love black dogs, and have the time/space to have one. The only thing stopping me is that I'm waiting for a new knee. For once in my life, I am being practical😈

My sister is like you. Waiting to see if her AF can be sorted out before getting another dog. The pups I first posted would have been her choice but unfortunately common sense had to prevail.

The blue merles are gorgeous ❤❤

Don't they vary in price though? Some £1200, some £600, some £250.

Wonder why there is such a variance?
Optimism I guess for the more expensive ones. No idea why the £2k ones I posted were so expensive, I certainly wouldn't pay that for one. Looks as though the original litter I posted are all gone, ad seems to have disappeared. Temptation removed.
