My friends 12yr old has been lame since about May. We are now awaiting results of a 2nd MRI. 1st scan showed fluid on navicular joint & vet said it was probably caused by some kind of trauma to the foot ie: it happened when the ground was hard back in May and he's a bit a twit in the morning when first turned out !!!

As its been so long and 13 weeks box rest didn't help the Vet is now saying that it is looking as though the lameness is possibly coming from the bone not just a strain to the ligaments in the foot like they first thought.

He's only 12 and was always stunning, loved jumping and bombing around the countryside and he was really really fit. Its so sad to see him now after so long out of work

Friend is gutted thinking she may have to retire him or something and can only see the worst case senarios

If it is Navicular what are the possible outcomes? I don't really know much about it or what it is exactly ......

Is it likely he will ever be ridden again - are there things they can do to help if it is ??

Ditto P_G. A couple of horses down my yard have special shoes for navicular. It depends on the severity, some can carry on working but others can't. Fingers crossed for your friend though.

If you run a search in Vetinary there are a couple of really useful posts, I asked the same question when my mare was diagnosed and the positive responce was brilliant. It was also very useful as people went down different routes with treatment- some with better outcomes than others
