If the scans prove its navicular what are the possible outcomes?

My friends 12yr old has been lame since about May. We are now awaiting results of a 2nd MRI. 1st scan showed fluid on navicular joint & vet said it was probably caused by some kind of trauma to the foot ie: it happened when the ground was hard back in May and he's a bit a twit in the morning when first turned out !!!

As its been so long and 13 weeks box rest didn't help the Vet is now saying that it is looking as though the lameness is possibly coming from the bone not just a strain to the ligaments in the foot like they first thought.

He's only 12 and was always stunning, loved jumping and bombing around the countryside and he was really really fit. Its so sad to see him now after so long out of work

Friend is gutted thinking she may have to retire him or something and can only see the worst case senarios

If it is Navicular what are the possible outcomes? I don't really know much about it or what it is exactly ...... Is it likely he will ever be ridden again - are there things they can do to help if it is ??

I'm not sure, sometimes they inject the joint - but be WARE I have heard a horror story about a horse getting an infection due the injection and ended being destroyed. Use a good vet, of course, you prob are..

What a sad story.. mine's off lame at mo too and I'm not sure what, just 10 days so far.

Many go on and on with 'bute for a long time. They go on good ground, not being hammered, degenerating very slowly.
I'm surprised that he didn't go sound after that amount of box rest, poor boy, that must be hell for him if he likes flying around the countryside. Perhaps an injection will help to begin with as he started this all off with trauma, quite suddenly.

Porkie... I want to tell you something that saved my horse, and hubbys eventer, from retirement due to cuadal heel pain/nav issues.

My own TBx was diagnosed with Nav 4 years ago and the vets said he would be no more than paddock sound. I ran out of insurance money and someone on here suggested Cytek shoes. Vets and farriers dont recognise them... and there are poeple who dont get on with them or spout old wives tales... but used like a traditional shoe (ie, reshod every 5 to 6 weeks) they work brilliantly for horses with feet and hoof issues. He is now 99% sound...like all 14-15 year olds he suffers from athritis and I listen to what he sayss...but he jumps, hunt and schools.

Anyway...there you go.

There is a potential way for your horse to have his life back...never forget this post - it may serve you well when all "approved" methods fail.

PM me if you want to talk !
