In the past I've had one horse break a leg and one disembowel itself and our vets take a good 30-40mins (thats the close one!) to get out to us but our huntsman can be with us in 15mins. If it was something you though was fatal would you opt for huntsman or vet?

If something had happened and the horse was suffering then I'd have the huntsman out in a flash, he'd be here in 10 mins.
However, if it was a planned departure than I'd use the vet, and have the horse leave by lethal injection I think. Cybele and Tills are head shy around men (particularly those that smell like vets!) so they'd go by L.I., but my other two could go by gun. Unfortunately something I've been thinking about alot lately.

Huntsman, and my horses go to kennels to be pts too.
In that sort of situation with no Vet or Huntsman to hand and I had a gun I'd do it myself if it meant ending an animals suffering. Probably be prosecuted from here to Kingdom come by all the societies for doing it but I'd face the consequences afterwards.

TBH I wouldn't know how to get hold of a huntsman quickly, but will now make it my duty to find out ! I'd probably see how far away the vet was first but if it were a definite PTS would use huntsman if he were there first.

IMHO and i know i am going to be slated for this but could you seriously stand there and shoot a horse you have loved and grown up with most of your life? I would never be able to! At least the leathal injection is more humane and a lot nicer!

I don't think there are huntsman near here, or I've certainly never seen or heard of one. I'm not sure what the rules are, but I know the farmer has a shotgun for sheep/cow emergencies, and if it was going to be a long wait for the vet I'd beg him to do it

. But if I had a choice it would be vet by injection

I wouldn't shoot it, the HM would. And yes, had the vet shoot my polo pony when she broken her cannon bone. How is the lethal injection kinder or nicer? It takes longer for a start - with a bullet its dead before it hits the ground. Surely the main thing is putting the horse out of its misery the fastest way possible?

I use whomever could get here the quickest, however no matter which one I used the horse would be shot.

My vet lives over an hour away and is frequently over 3 or 4 hours from me so in emergencies I have to be able to cope with whatever needs to be done. If the horse needed shooting then I would likely do it myself or ask a trusted friend to do it. It is legal for us as horse-farmers to shoot horses over here.

I disagree. I think I'd rather be shot!! Also what about the euthanasia cases where one half of a couple helps the other to die??

its my opinion! I would never be able to have a horse shot! I would not dream of it! I no probs with anyone else doing it i personally would prefer the vet! Could never do it! If a horse i had had to be PTS i would never like to see a bullet hole through it head!

Whichever was closer... Our vets are literally down the road from the yard, so probably them. And I'd choose lethal injection if it was a planned death. I just don't like the idea of them hearing the gun, but some people say that they're dead before the the bang.

I think, until, God Forbid, the situation arises and one has to deal with it it is easy enough to say one thing or another.

In an emergency, when your horse was lying on the floor struggling to get up with a bone sticking out through it's skin, making the most god awful groaning noises and calling to you, and they do to help, given a gun (Huntsman, farmer, whatever) on site and a Vet with an injection 45 minutes away,in the name of humanity what would you do?

I suppose if you put it like that its a bit diff! if it was a planned death tho would def have injection! I would never be able to shoot my own horse tho!

Would use whichever was quicker. At the moment hunt kennels are nearer but they are looking for new premises which could be a lot further than vet. I chose to have my old pony shot, she didn't like injections, and think would probably prefer the gun again in future. It is very quick.
