If there is one bad habit all owners should sort out...

If the horse usually comes in earlier, but was being left out last night, then I think I can understand why it barged out. I'm not saying its acceptable, but in a situation like that I don't think it takes an exceptionally rude horse to bring itself in, more it takes an exceptionally polite horse not to.

My boy was a stroppy git when I got him; he'd never been taught manners properly, so we had to start from scratch getting respect on the ground first then progressing this into ridden work. A lot to do! But he's now a lovely polite boy.

I had a mare on loan from my trainer and the first night I had her at my place, I went into the stable with a haynet to hang up, and blow-me-down if this mare didn't stand back and wait for me to hang the thing up, then just stood there, obviously waiting for me to say OK you can eat!!! Bless her, a real little star.

So then I started the same thing with my boy; now he's a lovely polite boy and waits patiently for me to hang his net up before attacking it - there's nothing worse is there, to have a horse diving at the haynet before you've hung the flippin thing up properly?

So yes, agree, there's nothing worse - or more dangerous - then bargy horses. And if they're not polite on the ground and have learnt to respect people, then they're gonna be ignorant gits when anyone gets on top; it follows to reason.

If I had to deal with the horse OP mentions, then I'd have a word with its owner PDQ. But whatever, there's nothing to stop OP doing what she can to sort the horse - as horses can and will learn to respect individual people and give them space. If its a matter of safety, and it obviously is, then I would suggest there is plenty of grounds for OP doing what she has to do to sort it.

I am totally with you on the bargyness, but I 'm sorry, the owner of this horse is by no means at fault. Horses at this time of year are.....hungry! All loitering at gates to come in for their hay / feed. Lots of arm waving and shouting should keep them back, but you should see the lot on our yard....bunch of hooligans ( all 34 liverys).
