If u could no longer compete would u still have a horse?

Probably not no. I'm not a happy hacker and only hack as it helps with fitness for my competing.
I compete mainly BE at 100 level and Dressage at Novice level so not dizzy heights. I need a target to be aiming for otherwise I find it hard to be motivated. Give me something to aim for though and I slog my guts out to get there.

I've always had horses to compete/train/ride (low level stuff). I prefer the training to the competing to be honest, so in that sense I would say no, I wouldn't have horses if I couldn't do that.

Absolutely would, would even have horses if I couldn't ride them at all. I love (and have loved) competing but having horses is about much, much more than that. I lost my girl to grass sickness a couple of months ago but I know that, had she survived, I would've kept her and had fun with even if she could never have been ridden again.

Probably not - not because of the competing but because I like to have a goal and something to work towards. Honestly can't imagine having a horse if it was just hacking and schooling without the aim of progressing in mind, and can't imagine paying for lessons if we weren't aiming to progress.

I love my horse, but the progression is what I enjoy and I certainly couldn't justify what I pay each month for a happy hacker ...

I keep mine I don't ride them and I do anything for them but I am very competitive I love to see them compete with their young riders even if they don't do well in a class if they have performed appropriately then that is fine, I also like turning them out to a very high standard for in hand I love seeing them clean shiny and full of beans ready for a class. But personally I hate going in the ring

I have avoided competition for many years.....I still have my horses (Arabs) and really enjoy hacking and doing the odd natural horsemanship clinic....I would be miserable and bad tempered if I didn't have them to fuss over and enjoy :) Imo competition usually brings out the worst in humans who have the urge to win to the detriment of their horse......
