Many of us are victims of rose tinted glasses when it comes to our own horses; we see them as perfect, no matter what anyone says! now, i have no intention of breeding from my mare (she's nearly 13, so too old for first foal anyway - at least thats my excuse!!!!!!) however my mum would like to believe otherwise; she still believes there's plenty of time for 'Ellie Babies' yet.

so, supposing the time was right, a full size foaling box magically appeared, and that we WERE to consider it, what kind of stallion would you put her to, and what conformation aspects would you look to balance? i've been fascinated by reading other people's posts regarding conformation; I can spot a ewe neck, upright shoulder or long back for instance, but as for the more intricate parts of conformation critique, i have no idea! so can you give me some (honest) feedback on my mare? thankies!!!!

(PS. if mum's wishes WERE foalies, we would be looking to produce something that had SJ/dressage potential)

Here she is (she was a 5 year old in this pic):

and here she is at 12:

Can I just say she's not too old for a first foal. Most say 14 is the oldest that a mare should have a first foal, but mine were 14 and 15 when they were put in-foal, so 15 and 16 when they had them. And I've known a maiden mare at 18

I think shes lovely, and 13 is far from being too old to breed, have a vet check her over to verify that everything inside and out appears normal.

How is she bred? She has that very French look to her.

shes not too old to breed from... the horse at my yard is due for her first and shes 20

if shes firery you could add some irish stallion blood in, as this always seems to calm them (in my experience anyhoos!)
i would reccomend a horse called rachelle comet, a nobody but throwing beautiful foals and faboulous jumps - one was 2nd at RDS!
or you could go for the irish eventing stallion glenhill gold - had some decent results at 2* and 3* - even better that hes coloured

my friend put him to her mare who looks very like yours conformationally wise and threw a fantastic foal - won first ever show!

you got it! she's Selle Francais X Arab, though we're not sure how much arab as it was on her dam's side, and we don't have details of the dam's breeding.

Thought so

she is remarkably similar to our foundation mare, it was the head that was the give away though. Is there any Grand Veneur in there? I would take a look at Quasimodo Z

htobago - yes, she is on allbreeds, but again, her dam has no record

she's out of a mare named 'Lola', and she's registered with NRPS (please dont ask me to translate, its all double dutch!!!!) i have contacted the breed society, but they have only been able to give me details on her sire, nothing on the dam. havent heard back from the actual breeder at all, not for want of trying tho!

(PS. on allbreeds, her registered name is 'Chicka')

The family connections between the two mares are ones you would exopect to see in the French lines, Ultimate, Precipitation, Ibrahim and Orange Peel, all the foundation bloodlines, hence the strong similarities I guess.
Your mare also has the blood of Rantzau xx Lots of exciting stallions for you match her up with.

Awwwwwww don't tempt me! i would love her to have a foalie (though i wouldnt be in a position to do it until a couple of years' time) but i have known some people have horrific problems with mares that should have been fine. what are the risks, realistically? the only real thing stopping me is the risk of losing her; i couldnt live with myself if anything happened!

Dont breed from her if she is precious to you, we lost ours this year in foaling

No it would have been her 3rd foal. There was no real reason for it to go so badly wrong either. Has made us think twice about breeding anything else!!

When I was thinking about putting Hannah in foal, I had a very good friend, who had bred herself, who talked me through all the possible risks to help me make the correct decision. One was, "How would you feel if you lost the mare and the foal?" and the other, "How would you cope if your lost the mare and had to hand rear the foal should no foster mother be available?"

I know these questions are very depressing, but it really is something you have to be prepared for should it arise. Luckily, both my mare and her foal are absolutely fine and I have enjoyed the whole experience so much. I would do it again as I have now learned so much more from my first experience but it is not a decision to take lightly.
