If you’ve sold your box recently, did you sell privately or through a dealer?

I think I’m going to sell my 3.5t box. Trying to weigh up the cost of having it whilst not using it all the time and it being bigger than I need, Vs knowing it’s a good box that’s never really had any issues/possibly having a vet emergency and having a panic trying to get transport. I think I’m leaning towards selling but not convinced either way. Trying to mull over my options and would appreciate others thoughts.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and regretted selling?

I bought it in early 2017 as a new build on 60 Reg chassis because I needed a 5 seater cab due to taking eldest son to summer PC rallies in the week and having to bring along his younger siblings. It’s a coachbuilt and it’s super roomy inside as we thought we’d be getting another elephant sized horse 16.2+ because son was growing like a weed.

However, we’re now down to just the one, my son is at uni and doesn’t ride anymore. So little 14.2 Coblet is swimming around in there with enough room for a big horse. Even if we get another horse in the future, when teenaged cob retires (hopefully not for a v long time!) I’m 5’4ish and wouldn’t want anything over 15.2 absolute max so don’t need a box built for something big.

I don’t drive it as much now as I only really compete in endurance half a dozen times a year, plus going to training sessions/going out locally for different hacking etc. I’m probably driving it just as much to ‘take it for a spin’ for its health as I am actually using it as a horse taxi.

Now I don’t need such a big box (admittedly not big in the grand scheme of things but feels that way to me!) I think I’d feel more confident in something a bit smaller, one of the van style boxes like equisport.

Previously when I was taking it out once a week or more I was a more confident and it helped we were almost always going out to local venues so I knew the routes, knew how to avoid low bridges/single track lanes with few passing places etc, whereas now I’m going 50+ miles away and don’t know the area at all (I remember having a minor meltdown when the motorway was closed and all the traffic was redirected through a village and kept seeing ‘low bridge ahead’ signs thinking how the chuff am I going to 3 point turn it in all this gridlocked traffic on a small high street. As it happens the bridge was fine but I was sweating out of my eyeballs till I saw the sign with the actual height on it).

I don’t use it as much over the winter, just to hack somewhere different or for training at the gallops- which I technically don’t NEED to do, so thinking I’d save a lot of money (have to pay to park at our yard, plus regular tax/Insurance etc) if I sold now, and hired for the 2/3 times I want to do some more EGB on September/October it and then buy something smaller in the spring. Do boxes, like horses, sell at premium in spring/summer when people are keener to enjoy the nice weather? (Tho not seen much of it lately!)

Has anyone sold their boxes recently, did you do it privately? Through Facebook or somewhere else? A lot of the ads on horse quest etc seem to be for brand new boxes direct from the builder (last time I checked at least).

Or did you go via a dealer? The builder I bought it from said he’d buy it back when it came to selling. Obviously less stress and hassle to do that, (tho would require someone to take a day off work to drive there in convoy with me and bring me home) but they need to make a profit so not sure how much of a chunk they’d take.

I know a friend recently looked at selling her box (older, smaller van type) too a dealer that was selling lots of older van types and he offered her just over 50% of what he was selling similar models for, which is a lot! She decided against it and is thinking of selling privately and downsizing to a trailer, but is in the same position, flipping between sell and keep.

I’ve heard terrible things about a company called The Horsebox Seller, (I think that’s right), taking boxes and not paying the owners on completion of sale, but wondered if there is anyone people might recommend? Is there a common % that you’d expect a dealer to offer in terms of trade price vs private sale?

What have others done and how did you find it?

Thanks very much, for getting this far through my jumbled thoughts and ramblings!

I sold my BOSS 3:5 ton through word of mouth at a local show. I sold for bit more than I bought it, after 5 years of owning. I did same reason as you, son in uni stopped riding and sold his two horses . BOSS lorries are hard to find 2nd hand

Boxes tend not to sell very quickly between November and February but come March there are few safe ones about. Other than the 5 seater part which will take up room at the front whereas it may be better utilities in the back l don’t think there’s a huge amount of difference in the internal horse size of most boxes and l most certainly wouldn’t be looking at a van type although the BOSS boxes, which l wouldn’t say are van type are lighter than some 3-5. If you want to sell and it’s a newish box in good condition l would have tnough5 it would sell easily enough privately. But as you know it’s history and will still need a box l would just keep it.

Put it on Facebook page "Horseboxes and trailers for sale new and used" have a scroll to see if anything similar to yours to see if your price is right, GOOD pictures is the key to selling, nothing ventured nothing gained. (If it's got a good low unladen weight don't forget to mention it. )

Sold mine privately to a nice lady who was actually the first and only person that came to view it.
loads of enquiries but never heard from them again.
The lady sent her mechanic and he inspected it and it sold for asking price. it was low mileage and in good condition.
I put it on FB marketplace which then cross posts it on to other groups. Very easy and free

Back in 2020 I listed my 3.5t box on Facebook (local horse pages and marketplace), along with preloved and gumtree.

I was contacted by Warwickshire Horseboxes and I sold to him unseen after a heap of timewasters.

My box wasn't as flash as yours, it was a 2000/01 (can't remember) iveco coach built. It had a clean MOT but it was a ~ 20 year old box.

Warwickshire horseboxes transferred a deposit to my account then sent someone to pick it up. Once they confirmed it started and was as advertised the balance was transferred then they drove it off.

So I can recommend them from a selling POV

Having said that the price of a good 3.5t has massively increased. I've started looking, just in case I win the lottery, so I'd advise trying to sell privately because you should get decent money for a sound and safe reliable 3.5t.

Both myself and my friend have recently sold our 3.5t. we sold privately through Facebook (I sold through word of mouth, her through marketplace) and we both sold to the first person to view, all done and dusted within a week.
I wouldn't go for a van style one, and if you are going to continue to use it - even if only occasionally - I would be tempted to keep. Better to have a box you know is reliable, rather then gamble on something 'new' which may come with unknown issues.

Thank you all.

It seems that selling privately isn’t as painful as I thought. I’d assumed there’d be a lot of time wasters.

Yes, the argument ‘better the devil you know’ had occurred to me! I do worry about getting something else as never really had any bother with it. Worst thing was I had to replace the starter motor. Which is why I’ve dithered for a while as I know some people who have had real problems with their boxes.

The payload is 1080kg (I have the certificate from when I bought it) so fairly reasonable but I think a lot of people aim for 1200kg which seems to be the max possible.

Maybe I’ll hold onto it till our last event in October, then look to sell. It costs just under £100 a month in parking/tax/insurance so if I’m not planning on competing again till April it’s quite a bit of money just to have it there incase I fancy hacking somewhere else etc.

Thank you all, definitely given me some things to think about.

Might be worth looking for a local self hire 3.5t

My horse decided he needed to he ferried about to specialists and hospitals literally 2wks after I sold my trailer then towing car 🤦🏼‍♀️ this forced me to find a transporter and later a self hire box.

The self drive hire 3.5t is 20mins from me, £100 for a full day and it used less than £30 of fuel. I paid extra to collect the night before too. On the face of it £150 is expensive for a day buy working out cost of that vs daily cost of my own that didn't go out much it is better value for money.

Yes, exactly. There are a few self hires locally, so whilst it’s obviously less convenient… it’s not several hundred pounds less convenient 😂

We’re going away next week so I’ll try and make a decision whilst I’m away, and stop giving myself whiplash from flip flopping between decisions!
