If you don't have your own horse but ride do you have riders insurance?

If so, who with?

I've just had a pretty hairy lesson and dh has demanded I get insurance "incase I land on my head and get paralysed". I can see his point!

Any recommendations?

When I looked it was very expensive and didn't cover a lot. You might be better off with a more general critical illness or income protection policy that covers you to ride. Ask an independent financial advisor but be aware they will get commission for selling you a policy.

If I had a sharer, I wouldn't let them on my horse without rider insurance or getting them added to my insurance! more for me really! if they took my horse out and cause a massive accident I wouldn't want to be left liable! or for my insurance to refuse to cover it!

Petplan does a decent rider-only insurance :)

I get mine through my bank, covers most risk sports as well as riding. I do ensure that all horses I ride have at least public liability in place for anyone riding them with their owner's permission.

The gold membership with the BHS I think is a good price. Link http://www.bhs.org.uk/Join_Or_Support_Us/Join_the_BHS/Membership_Gold.aspx

I looked into it when I was sharing though I didn't need it since I was covered on owners insurance. Considering the riding schools in my area are all BHS approved they all have their own insurance to cover riders so haven't needed it on those occasions either. I've heard bhs are good though if you need to claim etc

I am with Horse and Rider Direct. They have different levels of insurance for the type of riding you do plus very good public liability cover and cover for vet fees

If you have a sharer you want them to be covered by public liability insurance, but I think OP was asking about accident insurance and most of these are only for £10k which won't go anywhere in the event of a serious accident.

I work for a well known high street bank who offer personal accident cover for £7.99 a month, so not expensive at all. It pays out for a whole range of injuries, minor-major and even accidental death. It covers sports as long as they are not being played professionally. I won't mention the name of the bank as I don't want to be told off for advertising but its well worth asking at your bank if they offer it or anything equal :)

I will look into life insurance with critical injury cover.

The bhs cover only seems to pay out 5k for even the most life changing injuries and that wouldn't be much use,

Thanks all :)

Although I had BHS GOLD I went for some lessons at Contessa in Herts and we had to have a rider policy etc I cant remember how much it was but I suppose they are so worried about being sued etc that they insisted we took on their policy. I know a brilliant local school who taught my kids and a mother sued them on no win no fee as their kid broke its arm and they hadnt realised it was a dangerous sport(yes there were signs up and they were very strict with kids body protectors up to date hats etc). It was terrible for the owner and she nearly shut pony club etc etc. So hence all this insurance.
