BBC news this morning had a long report on horse theft. Said horses stolen risk having their microchip hacked out! I've never heard of this happrning before. They use the phrase I think was used for bikes a few years ago. As yet their isn't an eqhine wheel Lock.

I was a bit dumbfounded. There was a DNA guy stating that all horses have to have a microchip, I just thought the whole thing was poor, lazy reporting tbh. Would be far more worthwhile to talk about fly grazing.

I was wondering about the microchip comment too as I wasn`t aware that it was compulsory for all horses to be microchipped and didn`t think it was. Is it?

How do you freezemark a grey?

Siennamum agreed. I didn't think it wad law for all horses to have micrichips either. Just foals from a certain date. Factually sketchy and scaremongerjng.

We watched the report on the BBC news with some horror!
I hadnt realised the implication, microchips being cut out, horses stolen and going for meat?
I would have thought slaughterhouses, if indeed thats where the animals went, had to have passports etc?
I may not be fully aware of the situation in the uk, being non resident, where it is far more common for horses to have microchips.
Those poor ladies, esp the one with the coloured mare who had been stolen, thankfully the horse was back with her owner.

Anyone else watch the report?

Havn't read the report but tbh there is little need for microchips to be cut out as technology has been used to my knowledge to render implanted ones unreadable...

It is compulsory for all horses applying for a passport (so mostly effects foals) to be microchipped. This has been the case since July 2009

Agree it is now the law to have microchips with all new passports.
I have all mine freezemarked as to me a microchip is no deterent against theft, not to mention the fact they can move and travel under the skin.
Farmkey also do the horseshoe micromark which is a visual sign that the horse is microchipped.

I saw this report. The lady whose horse had been stolen (and later found) said that her fence had been broken to get the horse out. the 'reporter' then immediately followed that with the 'lock it or lost' comment. How do you lock a fence so that it can't be broken down? I also thought it inappropriate that the horses were in the stables when they were showing the locks, which I would have put round the gates. Some people might have thought that they were recommending locking the stable doors - a very dangerous practice.
