You notified the police and the horse was checked for microchip/freezemark would this horse legally become yours after 21 days?

Said horse was found in Meday, No information given as of yet, Not sure if passport company informed, incase of passport?

Is this information correct?

Police have told lady caring for said horse that it legally becomes hers from 21 days if no owner comes forward?
 
Even withholding information to find the animals owner?

All thats been said is, 'Anyone lost a horse in Medway'
 
There is a procedure that need to be followed to ensure that the correct action has been taken within that 21 days before the horse becomes yours. Technically the horse should no be moved (assuming it's in a field) and notices must be put up for this period of time to try and trace the owner.

Even once the horse legally becomes yours I think it can be claimed back (costs reimbursed) if they owner where to come forward.

I'm sure someone with more accurate knowledge then that will come forward.

I will say though, after finding and taking in a horse the Winter before last it is not something that I would do again, 'good' horses don't get dumped for no reason. Although the horse I found was really lovey he had 'history' and needed completely starting again. It took me 9 months of hell to get a duplicate passport for him and only then could I rehome him.

A few years ago people down the lane from our yard found 3 ponies on the lane, they came and asked us for help so got a bunch of us and managed to get a headcollar on one and lead it with the others following (us herding). We got them in stables and fed, wormed and de-liced them, contacted police and other charities and turned them out into paddocks. A couple of weeks later, the owners contacted us asking us to return them to a paddock further up the lane, they must have known we had them all along but waited to contact us. No money donated towards their care and we are a charity!

Be very careful.
 
The lady has said she is not allowed to give out any information at all not even an area of MEDWAY that it was found?

It sounds like a load of rubbish BUT there are risks that someone who doesn't own the horse will try to claim it if they are given too much information about it.
 
She wont give a police ref or local police station number or anything

This is all I have got from her

Police have stated I'm not aloud to give up any information about the horse, as can attract unwanted attention, so just to write what I have written ( Anybody lost a horse in the Medway area ) would like them to inbox me with all information about they're missing horse, literally all info pictures, age, markings, temperament

I have now had him for 3 days and police have had no calls with regards to a missing horse etc

Well I'm not going to get into to be honest I'm doing as I'm told by the police

I have checked every forum on Facebook for any missing horses matching the description have found nothing

They can't give you anything! It's a tight nicked investigation. If anything or anybody comes to the yard unknown they will be prosecuted as will you for giving information! Thanks but your making it worse! I'm 18 and the horse is having alot going on! His hooves are going to be trimmed and the vet is getting called! Until his owner is found police are investigating! So if your not going to help then don't comment and make my life more difficult

I never stated I want to keep it! I've done everything in the last 3 days to do what I can to find the owner! The horse is not nice atall! It has kicked me twice reared on me 5 times and bit and bolted a fair few! The horse has MAJOR ISSUES!

Extreme trust issues!

The police have stated to me if I go against what they've stated to me I can get in trouble myself and I'm not willing to do that!

I think it's lots of posts from Facebook made by the person who found the horse, but with posts by other people removed. They seem to be rather melodramatic and silly in their interpretation of what the police said. However I don't think it's right to paste their posts here, which they may not have meant to be public.
 
It's interesting that the replies to each comment haven't been posted.

You didn't find the horse OP and I rake it you aren't footing the bill for any care so why are you so worried? It's none of your business.
 
Ah, thank you Fiona..not sure what the point is then op in just posting a whole string of those, especially one that just says "no".
Re the horse, if one of mine was stolen and dumped I would expect the passport agency and my microchip company to be informed.

People cannot rely on facebook etc, what if they are dumped in another part of the country.
 
Not all horses are microchipped and if the horse isn't freezemarked either then there's no way of tracing the horse's identity to inform the relevant passport agency. Assuming the horse has a passport anyway. It may be law to have one but many owners haven't done it.
 
A lot of this is pure garble (or garbage) but two points are valid.

When, many years ago, a stallion galloped past my front door on our country lane of a summer evening, and I caught him, the police said two things:

1. That if nobody claimed him he would become mine after 21 days

2. While they were happy that I was doing a lot of work trying to find his owner (which saved them) they told me not to be too specific about the horse - to get the information from the other party

As it happened this horse had a very distinctive feature - his ears. I told the police that I didn't think he was an English or indeed western European breed. They told me to keep this information to myself but to ask any candidates for ownership "would you say he has any noticeable features?" When his owner duly claimed him (next day) it turned out he was a show-jumping Orlov Trotter (Russian)!
 
Three days is nothing in the scheme of things, we had a stallion galloping along a footpath and I duly caught it, told the police and put up notices to say it had been found. It was two weeks later before the owner canme forwards as they hadn't realised it was even missing.
 
Makes sense to me that you wouldn't give too much info out about the horse you found. If owner contacts you and describes it accurately you would know it's probably genuinely their horse.

OP what is the purpose of this post? It comes across as shot grapes or trying to set the person in question up for a fall. As far as I can see it makes sense to let the public know you have found a horse but to let anyone approaching you tell you the details of the one they are missing to see if it matches. There are a lot of dishonest people in this industry who would try their luck claiming a lost horse.
 
I agree with the police, if the finder puts up an ad saying 15hh bay gelding with 2 white socks and scar on front knee found in XYZ area, and someone rocks up saying - yep that's mine - how would you know?

Better to put found horse and make the apparent owner describe it in detail as evidence it is indeed theirs.
