we have an 'indoor exercise area' not quite an indoor school, more of a 20x30 indoor area that has a wood chipping type surface. think it was an old comp yard and this would have been like a warm up/collecting ring maybe. its currently used for basic excercise some turn out if weather bad, but it has ig supporting pillers down the middle so you cant lunge and it has a concrete base under the wood chippings which doesnt make for ideal going so folk only tend to walk in it. going is not great. it is not harrowed or anything as isn't really a proper surface. would you use it? getting bit stuck now as outdoor schools lights are a nightmare (not yo fault to do with planning permission) and really are more hassle than worth (meaning 3 min walk down pitch black lane then trying to get a petrol generator started then going back for your horse etc etc) most of my friends have moved yards for an indoor school. i feel i now have a horse that could do so much but do to current yard feel i'm missing out. would simple walk work in the exercise area do any good?

Simple walk work can be used to do stretching / bending excercises like serpentines etc and these are always worth doing. Might as well do as much as you can if you don't want to move for an indoor school.

i am considering moving ye, but kinda difficult as i have two other horses, one who lives out 24/7 (no other option, dont have time to do 3 on diy!) and one very old pony who is quite settled so feel bad for thinking of moving her. cant sell any of te other two for long winded reasons so feel bad for moving them to suit me and my other horse. would be hard pushed to find another yard that caters for my complex arrangement!!!! wouldnt really need an indoor school, just an outdoor one that wasn't such a faff would do

Personally I would do more than walk in it because of the surface and the size - you don't want a bad fall due to your horse being unbalanced. But who wants to spend all their schooling time walking? You sound in a similar situation to me and I have made the decision to move. The outdoor school I currently ride in (or at least would ride in were it not frozen) is currently the same size as your indoor one.
