a horse thats lame, what would you do?? She will come sound with rest (ligament), owner is at a dead end and cant keep horses anymore, she loves her dearly but she doesnt no anyone that will take her on..... what would you do in this situation?

Pernament loan, stating that she needs to be companion to begin with, with possibilty of coming sound later? That way owner doesnt loose horse completely and can keep an eye on how its being kept..

I know of a horse in a similar situation who is unsound with a check ligament. He comes sound but as soon as he trots around again he goes unsound. His owner plans to PTS if he doesn't come sound in the next few months. However his owner is male and doesn't seem to have the same degree of sentiment towards his horses as most of us do. This horse is young,8 if I remember correctly and a gorgeous fresian x. He is the friendliest chap imaginable with people and horses and would make a great companion. If this mare is field sound without medication,is of a good temperament and is not aged I would be inclined to put her out on permanent loan to someone who can keep her as a companion.

Mybe pop her on project horses for permanant loan. Maybe eith the option that if she dosnt come sound owner will pay to have the mare PTS. However at this time or year and with the way things are, she will be lucky to get an intrest.

A lot depends on the reason for the lameness, the vet reports, if the mare is on medication, ect.

I would put on loan as a companion or PTS I'm afraid.

As idealistic as it sounds to find a lovely new owner who is prepared to take the risk that she will never come sound, the reality of it is that it is unlikely to be easy.

Someone I know was in the same situation recently.
A 5 year old 17hh fresian x. He went out on loan as a companion, unfortunately the loaner buted him up and started hacking him out (not to our knowledge). He would have come sound with rest but the loaner did more damage. Got him back in the spring and the owner kept him all summer until she decided best to PTS due to no space and did not want to put him on loan for this to happen again, he he was in a lot of pain after this loan home.

Depends on the horse too, this horse was a bit too much to handle for a companion!

you can find homes for such a horse. I have just sold a beautiful cb x tb - perm unsound - lame on front, to a lovely couple. They want her for light hacking and just looking after her. She sold within around 4 / 5 weeks of advert going out. they are thrilled to bits will her which is lovely. Im so please that i have found a lovely home for her. Shame the person that sold her to me wasnt so sympathetic

Shes found a home for her now

This lady has got a 28 year old mare that lives out all year with adlib hay, shelters etc and she needed a companion. She can go and see her and check on her when ever she likes. And maybe if her problems are sorted in a year then she can have her back to re-back
