If you hadn't got into horses/riding - what would you have done?

Did you have any other sports or hobbies about which you could have become equally passionate? If you have an equestrian career, what would you have done instead? Did you have to make a choice about which sport to concentrate on or was it only ever the one passion?

I started riding when I was 5 or 6 and did so regularly til I sold ponio at 18 when I took a break although I've come back to it now.
I took up kickboxing aged 14 and still do it 10yrs later, I'm passionate about both and have other sporty interests, although horses and punching people are my faves

Too be honest I would have probably gone completely nuts!

I think I would too Soufull! Just curious because in chatting to various people over the last years it seems that they fall into two camps - the ones who look completely bemused at the idea that they could ever have done anything not involving horses, and those who actually have had other interests and ended up having to make a choice - it doesn't seem to tally with level of ability/experience/success in compeition either.

If i hadnt got into horses i would be driving in my new range rover to the marina in the south of france. then i would be getting on my yaught and sailing the sunny seas drinking champagne. When i got to my private mooring in monaco i would shop all day before returning to my villa and having a party for all my friends. i think ive spent the equivalent on horses over the years, anyway!

I would go bonkersmad without horses! But have also taken up poledancing (lessons and fitness only!) its brilliant exercise and no the OH has no benefited yet am far so bashful!!!

i joined the navy for 4 years at the age of 17 then left as every time i saw someone riding i would get all upset and even sometimes cry! i hated a life without horses. now im skint most of the time a full time job and also clean for 2 hrs every morning as extra job but most importantly i have my horse and dog

Sounds like the smart choice to me! No point being miserable, even if being happy leaves you broke! You won't be the only one on here

I do have another hobbie that is important to me,but riding is much better for you then sitting at the PC gaming

Work wise, the best working years of my life wee with horses, yep even the sh1tty jobs I had.
Have done barwork which I loved but diddnt get the same buzz being on a yard gives and would love to go back to working with horses.
I think from the second you get horses under your skin you are doomed, nothing ever matches to them

I would have focused more on photography, would probably have better kit than I do (although I am quite happy with what I've got) and been able to do more professional work.

But I have a nice balance between the 2 hobbies and wouldn't change it

Iwould have probably been a 13 year old pregnant chav, living on the government, whilst drinking cider in the park

but seriously... sailing, my Uncle tried to make me get into it but horses won in the end

Hi All,

If I had not got into horses I would prob have tons of money, be less smelly, have nice clothes, loads of nights out, lovely long holidays, a nice car - and be utterly bloody miserable!

Im really not good at anything apart from being a loving horse owner (and part time alcoholic)

My horses mean everything to be and I cant imagine them not being in my life. I had a spell for about 8 months where I had no horse to ride after loosing my previous mare -my OH bought me a bike as he thought we could go cycling together in the evenings to distract me from mooching round the house (bless his heart). I have never told him this but I absolutely bloody detest that bike - it just reminds me of having no horse to ride!

So I deffo think that if I didnt have horses - I would be a total and utter bitch from hell most of the time!

I do wonder how I have turned into the archetypal mad horse woman with no other life, but hey ho there are plenty of us about

As I frequently remark to OH I have no hobby. OH has his tractors, daughter loves her riding, therefore I need to get myself a horse (to be companion to daughter's) when we eventually get her one this winter. I think I'm quite justified in this thought aren't I?

I have tried and tried, and quite simply can not imagine what I would have done!

I would have worked harder at school instead of bunking off to keep my pony fit for hunting in the winter, but how I would have filled the past 32 years (since I got my first ponio), I have no idea!

I had world titles in karate after 4 years of training..it came very naturally to me. I played a load of sports when I was a kid, and did well at most, but karate I really enjoyed. I quit a few months ago, just becuase I couldn't handle the teacher..its a shame, in that I know I could've done well. But I'm really glad I quit.

I just started trying to make riding into a career..had I never started riding, I would've gone back to the UK a couple weeks ago, gone to university and done the normal sensible thing. I even had places at some good ones. I then would've worked (hopefully) in journalism or editing of some description.

I would have definately gone into photography, I do still do it now but its mainly based around my horse. I do a job I hate to keep my horse healthy and happy and I would not have it any other way. (Unless anyone wants to pay me to ride and care for my horse!!!)

Seems like we all have a very healthy and varied range of hobbies and interests!

I'd probably have spent more time on ballet/gymnastics, as well as the usual range of team sports at school but wouldn't have been good enough to make a living out of either so would still have gone to university and ended up in an office!

Well.... i'd probably be more focused on pole dancing!

Sometimes i think i'll give up the pole dancing, but i've been going 3yrs now and i still can't do every move, so until i can do every move i probably won't give up!
