do you tow in 4 x 4 mode or not?

Reading the other post got me thinking - I was always told you don't need 4 x 4 unless you're off road but now i'm wondering!

i only put in 4 wheel drive when towing on the grass if it is a bit soggy. i also have soft/med/hard control on mine which is quite useful for the ground

I don't tow in 4x4 unless i'm in a muddy field with a risk of getting stuck.
I've been told to switch the AT off button too for towing. (think that is what the button is called)

I guess it depends what type you have. from what i was told when I got mine was that I was always in 4x4 mode regardless & would only need to change the diffs if at risk of being stuck.... does that make sense

Mine is a permanent 4 x 4. With my previous cars though I haven't needed to use 4 x 4 when towing. I thought it wears out the tyres - but I am hopeless with cars so I could be very wrong!!

Only have put it in 4x4 when in muddy parking, or if reversing up a wet hill! Ive put it in 4x4 when not towing when it snowed and my yard was down an ungritted road, and when I towed my boyfriends car out of a ditch!!

Ours is permanent four wheel drive, but those that aren't are rear wheel drive when in two wheel drive, which can make them very tail happy in the wet as they are not really designed for road use. When we had a Jeep I used four wheel drive mode most of the time for this reason. Some of the older Land Rovers cannot be used on the road in four wheel drive, but that is the very old ones!

Unless your car is set up for permanent 4 wheel drive, generally you should always drive 'real' 4x4's in 2 wheel drive, making them rear wheel drive.
You shouldn't continuously use 4 wheel drive on hard surfaces (tarmac etc.), as this will eventually trash the transmission by winding up the differentials, possibly to a catastrophic conclusion! It also uses a lot more fuel! lol

On slippery surfaces (showgrounds etc.), select 4 wheel high ratio if needed & only use 4 wheel low ratio if you are literally trying to crawl up a really slippery muddy exit for example! (As soon as you are back on level ground however, change out of this!)

Be kind to your 4x4 & it'll be kind to you! Abuse it & one day, there'll be a big loud bang as you go round that fifth roundabout, as the differentials decide enough is enough now!

No...I only put it into 4 wheel drive when I'm on wet grass or in mud....otherwise it stays in 2 wheel drive. Obviously you don't have this option in a Discovery being permanent 4 wheel drive

My OH does off road for a living and he always told me to keep in 2 wheel drive unless i go into a boggy field/mud/soft ground then to change to 4 wheel drive. If you have a car with full time 4x4 then thats different, you usually have a choice of 2 wheel drive,i know my work car thats a subaru has that.My OH said that it'll ruin the car if you drive in 4 wheel drive all the time.I'm no expert though,i just remember glimpses of what he sais,i don't listen much.

No of course I don't tow in 4WD when on the roads. I may use it if I need to get out of a field if the field is soft but what would be the point in being in 4WD on a tarmac road? I haven't seen the other post so no idea what was said - but it sounds like it's wrong, unless their vehicle is permanent 4WD, LOL!!

We have a freelander and its permanent 4 wheel drive, we opted for a diesel and found it was better on fuel than our old car!!

As for towing, sometimes hubby forgets that he is towing! A friend went and bought a petrol freelander after trying ours out and it guzzles fuel like there is no tomorrow!!
