in terms of that horses' forte, what happens when you find out what that forte is ?

Do you then compete in the discipline the horse is best at or plug away at your chosen discipline ?

Or sell horse and buy something that will do what you want it to!?

Sorry for the confusing Q!

Well it really depends. How is the horse in your discipline? Does he love to jump but you love flat?

I mean, I think whatever you do with your horse, being hacking dressage or whatever I think you should keep everything varied for the horses sake. So if he loves to jump, indulge him... But still work on your chosen path too. It really depends how much you want to keep the horse I suppose or whether infact you could do a bit of both!

Horse lives to jump and is very unenthusiastic about flatwork, he'll do it but makes zero effort. He isn't directly naughty but is lazy, stiff, wander-y and has many subtle evasions.

Put up a fence and same lazy, stiff, evasion-filled horse becomes supple, responsive and keen. Works in an outline and is hugely enthusiastic.

I like to do a bit of everything but love showing.

Have tried schooling around fences then removing one by one etc but as soon as fences removed he goes back to unenthusiastic donkey mode.

ETA - has lesson on Weds and Instructor said horse will never be for the flat as he's just not interested. So now I'm wondering if I abandon showing ideas and just take him SJ/XC and see if I can manage some WH classes.

Well if you like the horse why not?

You can but only try and at least that way you will know what to do for the best as you could try jumping and absolutely hate it, but until then I would definitely give it a go.

In the mean time, why not try and school a bit on a hack, (i.e go on a hack to school but also hack out for the fun of it too) and why not (to perk him up) work with poles, no jumps but just various pole exercises.... This may help at least with your way of going with WH classes to improve the flatwork.

Lastly, when working pop over a random jump every now and again, literally just a few never a course but enough so ''who knows when you might do it next'' this may keep his interest in the flat longer.

Good luck though, as you never know where this may take you.x

Thanks

We do school out hacking and he is marginally better and I always try to keep it interesting for him but he still lacks enthusiasm - he really is a totally different horse when there is a fence invovled.

Good way to look at it!

Captain loves to jump, but is hopeless at it,just can't sort legs out and is very long. Whereas he is very good on the flat but you have to vary what he does or he gets bored and goes flat and into donkey mode.

Fany hates flat work, but will do it because it is asked of her, however she loves to hack. So Elizabeth schools her indoors and then takes her for a hack for the cool down, where, within reason, she is allowed to go where she wants.

So I think it is give and take with your horse.

There is always the compromise of working hunter classes, he gets to jump you get to show.

And your show should sparkle because it is near the jumps
