Sadly I can answer this from experience

Each of the horses would just go visiting all the others, however the Section A, given that the gate was also open, would take herself up the drive, onto the road and then trot smartly down the road, in the same place on the road as she would if she were being ridden, for a quarter of a mile and then get very huffy if the field gate wasn't open.

I often leave his stable door open when i go to the tackroom and he just stands there eating his hay!

Monty would head straight for one of the other horse's stables to terrorise them

I know exactly what mine would do as that's what they do everyday - I just open the door and they walk to the field then I open the field gate in the evening and they walk into their stables! It only took a few days of owning Jerry for him to work out this system but it's very handy especially when I want to put them out/fetch them in when I'm in my work clothes and shoes!
