His mum died today. IMO she should've been PTS a couple of weeks ago, but I don't want to go into details as now my concern is helping her baby who is still severely underweight and now, of course, without his mum. YO has bought some mare replacement milk, which the grooms are supposed to feed him with from a bottle, but he won't touch it (they've been trying this for several days) I'd like to help in some way... I'm thinking of offering taking over from the grooms (who erm... often seem to have better things to do than feed orphan foals

) and would welcome ideas for feeding baby who has been virtually weaned for a month or two. He's now just under 3.5 months old.
He's also on his own at the moment. Would he be better out with all the other mares and foals or perhaps with PF and the Little Cigar, who are by themselves as well during the day?
Any suggestions/ideas recommended. I'll take some pics tomorrow, but he looks absolutely awful

That's sad news. Poor little chap. Re him going out with PF and Little Cigar, I'd be worried that PF wouldn't accept him being around, or Little Cigar would be too boisterous around him...I'm guessing he's really weak now? Any chance of finding a foster mare mum for him anywhere? It doesn't sound as though as if he'll survive for much longer with that bunch of b*^$*rd grooms 'caring' for him..go on..take him on..you know you want to....

Hi,
I remember. Thats so sad. There are some horrible people out there. I would put this in breeding again (or a link to here) as loads of foalie peeps in there that might not come in here.
I would think he deffo needs a friend tho. Isnt there a little older pony or something?
Poor foalie

Poor little foal, i think you are right that the foal needs to be with others, mares and foals ideally, but any company is better than none, this may perk him up and give him more of an appetite.
Are they trying him with a little hard feed soaked with good protein content? like a youngstock mix?

He needs to be with others I agree - or he is likely to just give up.

Would be very interesting to see if PF will be happy to have him with her and the little Cigar. You never know she may allow him to suckle.

Have you put this in the Breeding Section as well??????

I would be doing everything in my power to help him. Can you buy him so that you are totally in charge.

How heartbreaking.

Poor little baby I remember him well.
No advice but I hope you can give him a happy ending as his outlook doesn't sound too bright at the moment.

Try the milk from the a bucket, just be around in case he dives in nose first! It might sound daft, but I remember this as being a viable option from a James Herriot book

As to putting in with PF, can you get any of PF's scent onto the foal? It might help LC accept the babe.

Well, PF is VERY laid back and the Little Cigar just adores other horses. Foal has been weak since birth

and now he's looking for his mum...

Just breaks my heart! I'll suggest foster mum to YO.

Well, we don't have much variety when it comes to horse feed; it's either generic nuts or oats. Green-wise, we've got alfalfa and a bit of grass...

Well, she's got bags of milk, and the Little Cigar is closest to his age than the other foals. worth a try?

I'll do that now

Sadly, no, can't afford him at all.

I know. Absolutely tragic. Needn't have been this way if the proper care had been taken when he was born...

Surely his owner would let him go for peanuts. He can't actually be worth anything...

Hope theres an ok outcome for the litle scrap.

Talis wan't much older than that when I had him. He was fed milk pellets, but I never fed him milk from a bottle/bucket.

Have you tried this foal from a bucket? If he's been weaned for a while, surely he has been drinking normally from water troughs etc?

Good luck with him PF. Poor little mite.

LC thinks he's absolutely fascinating, but he (LC) might be a bit boisterous, do you think?

He's actually quite well-bred and I'm sure the owner is convinced he's not really that poorly. Plus, I've got to think of keeping him in the future, and I've already got 3!!

Sorry to hear about the mare. Last year a friend had a foal orfaned(spl) at 2 days old. He also wouldn't feed from a bottle but we tried him with a bucket and he never looked back. We also put one of my mares out with him who is maternal but had no foal and she looked after him (although didn't feed him).

Poor little foal! Have no idea of what to suggest - just sounds like he needs big cuddles and lots of tlc!! I'm sure you will do your best for him - and I'm sure LC would like a playmate!

[/ QUOTE ]
Yep, he definitely needs 1-1 care and attention. LC would adore him, but he might be a bit rough

It may be the only thing though that gives it the 'will' to carry on.

Find out how much it would be to buy it..............

Yes, he does drink normally from buckets. Perhaps that's the way forwards. What are milk pellets? I wonder if I can get some here?
