If you see someone doing something you deem to be 'wrong' at your yard

Do you say something? Or do you just live and let live?

Mostly I turn a blind eye - each to their own. But most times I think i should say something.

I'm not talking 'seriously wrong' as in abusing horses etc but often I see unsupervised kids, 5 yr olds riding in wellies, lunging without gloves, sweaty exhausted ponies being ragged about, trailers pulled by inappropriate vehicles.. the list could go on.

It's not my place to say something and I'd hate to be seen as 'holier than thou' but if it's dangerous do you intervene?
 
If it's stupidly dangerous then I will intervene or if I know the owner is inexperienced and appreciates the help. I am the second youngest on the yard and hence it isn't really my place to advise/critise.

I think one of the few times I intervened was when I caught the girl about to feed a bucket of sugar beet pellets instead of pony cubes....

I would keep quiet as much as possible. Although it is hard to ride whilst biting your lip that hard!

Live and let live...well

we had one livery once, and they were new to horses so If she had fitted something wrong or something like that I would help her, in a nice way lol

but usually, as in the case of patricia and roscoe

i just leave her to it, hes an angel when I ride him so yes... unless its putting someone in danger I dont usually say anything
 
Oh I probably would, as tactfully as possible, point out that a vehicle was not safe or legal as there is such as risk of injury to horses and people, not least other road users....

Its hard to say but if I actually thought something was THAT bad, I guess Id have to say - after all if their trailer flipped or something that was due to being towed by the wrong type of vehicle - could I love with myself if I hadn't said something.....
 
Not unless it affected the welfare of the horse, or affected me directly - for example when the kids are playing unsupervised I make sure their mother knows that I will not have my horse held responsible if one of then gets kicked.
In terms of what people wear when riding, that's up to them. Anyway, I've got no room to talk as I've been known to lunge without gloves!
 
I just ignore it. I do things that other people would tut tut at (riding in wellies etc), but I would be fuming if someone came up and had a go at me for it. As long as they're not endangering the horses life I don't see the problem.
 
Ditto, arwenplusone I tend to ignore them.

There was a horse on the yard the other week that had been out competing all day, and had competed in 3 jumping classes.

When he was brought home he was then jumped again, for about 40mins over a course of jumps and whipped because he was tired. He was knocking the jumps and ended up cutting his leg.

I had a word with the YO but I believe she turned a blind eye.
 
I might say something about the ponies although its not an issue at the yard I'm at - everything else I would let them get on with it unless specifically asked
 
I don't turn a blind eye - nothing goes unnoticed by me - however unless it is cruelty then I say nothing. The horse belongs to it's owner and it is not my place to say what they can and can't do with it.

Sometimes I might suggest an alternative way of doing things "to get the best from the horse" and I find this works better than actually telling people what not to do.

With respects to towing the trailer - no I would never say anything about their vehicle - that is down to the police to question, not me.
 
No, I would not say anything unless it was actually endangering the horse.

I do some things in my horse care that other people might not approve of but are not harmful to my horse or myself and I would be furious if somebody told me off for it.
 
I'd say something if it was any form of abuse, or neglect towards an animal....
but in the case of unruly kids not wearing gloves etc, let them learn the hard way i say

I tend not to say anything unless its bad for the equine or i have PMT!

Even then i may just 'suggest' that the horse is looking a little 'flat' (read knackered) and might peform better tomorrow.
Or that red cell worked wonders on my mare .........
Or something similar .. or comment 'your brave' if someones lunging a loon without gloves etc

Just having a go or telling people all there mistakes simply gets backs up and peeps wont take the advice, however well meant or correct, on principle.
 
Towing with the wrong vehicle could be endangering the horse
Many years ago I was parked up at a comp centre--car park on a slope, a car came in with trailer and 2 14.2 ponies, it could not stop on the slope and jack knifed into my LR. They could have jack-knifed on a road killed themselves and ponies
I think I would ask them to check the weight their vehicle could pull and try to explain regulations, but then Im ancient and dont care any more what anyone thinks--just care about the horses welfare!

however im on my own yard so it doesnt happen. If there are kids that i havent invited they get kicked off the yard pronto. If i have invited them and they are doing something that may be dangerous then they will get a lecture.
I have one livery only and she is a good friend, so i will let her know if she is doing something dangerous but other then that i let her get on with what ever she pleases.
