if you think riding a horse on the road is bad try.....

cycling!!! one of our cutomers is a very keen cyclist and will cover 30 - 50 miles a day at weekends, he hates cycling on country roads and has been sworn at, had stuff thrown from vehicles at him and even been pushed into a hedge by some impatient twat. he would rather cycle down the hard shoulder of the M25!! so if you think we get a raw deal......... p.s - yes he always uses cycle routes where they are provided, his pet hate is people weaving around in the traffic when there is an empty cycle path next door.......and he wouldn't mind sharing them with horse!! and he has also educated members of his cycle club to pass horses safetly and always call out from behind so as not to startle them.

Personally think you should be allowed to knock off any cyclist that insists on using the road, when there is a perfectly good cycle lane!!!

Cyclists do get a raw deal, I do admit I'm guilty of swearing at them in my car - would never yell at them though (unless they almost run me down when I'm walking) or throw stuff at them though, thats just pathetic! I don't have a problem with single cyclists, its the ones that weave about the middle of the road, go in huge groups you can't get past, cycle really slowly, go through lights, along pavements etc (or not going along pavements on country roads!)
 
My Oh used to cycle to work. At first he refused to wear hi viz, claiming he would look "like a woofta". He only almost got run over a few times before he nabbed my hi viz tabard!! He now has a motorbike and still wears my tabard (with BHS across the front 'grin]). Yes, he says people tend to 'aim' for cyclists, seeing how close they can get without knocking the cyclist off, but recons motorbikers get a much worse deal.

tell me about it!! i drive to work along the a29 a dual carriageway with a cycle path right next to it, and loads of cyclists all over the ruddy road, i give them a good toot as i go past!! trouble is i think most of them are migrant workers from the local factories - enough said

That reminds me of the group 100+ cyclist on a 'fun ride' along a narrow country lane on a very long (2 miles) steep hill, all over road (both sides), stopped on verges and passing places (both sides of road), stopped in road, and cycling at snails pace whilst wobbling all over road on route to dressage last summer, all the lorries had a terrible time getting past them as adults and kids a like had no road sense at all. The final straw was one complete prat who either didn't know or care that I was behind him, who was cycling without holding onto the handle bars.

Yep, thats the sort of thing I'm talking about lol. Or they come in dribs and drabs, you just manage to over take 5 groups when you spot them dotted about for the next 2 miles lol
 
I will be diplomatic and say some do lol. There's just something about them makes me angry, and I do cycle a bit myself. Mind you I stop and pull in if a car is coming on a country road, or go on the pavement.
 
LOL only jesting really.... I think there should be plenty of room for all on the roads, cars, bike & horses if everyone showed a bit of consideration!!!! ****Runs to go hug a tree and dance with the fairy people La La La****

I would pick taking Beau on the roads over my bike any day!!!

At least when he his pissed off drivers back off!!! - Especially when he stops and starts pawing the ground

OH and I almost got knocked off our bikes last year! We were cycling along (at 16mp I may add - so not 'overyly'slow) and some old c&nt swerved his car towards us as he was passing - it wasnt a country road, there was more than enough room but oh no he was having none of it, so OH just cycled up to him whne he was stopped at next junction and waited RIGHT next to him. I'm not that brave.

I can be hypocritical though as I know that riders can bug as well a cyclist when it comes to tracks, and walkers are just as bad!! The number of times I have had to politely ask to get past over and over again - both on horse or bike.

Basically........................if ur not surrounded by steel your at risk, not mean to be on the roads and a nuisance it seems! Shame, seeing as all those forms of transport have been around for hundreds and thousands of years (the walking that is)
 
I think cyclists are no better or worse than we are on horses. If one is cycling along at a rate of knots & not using the path or whateve then he/she's probably getting fitness work in for competitions etc. we should have some sympathy for that. I ride on a number of popular cysling routes and almost universally find them to be at worse indifferent to me and at best, really friendly and we have a mutual moan about car drivers.
They are annoying when you are in a hurry and can't overtake, but no more so than horses in a similar situation.
 
A lot of cyclists seem to think they are immune from the law, how many do you see without lights, surely a standard size light could be factory fitted and not removable? Our local 'all users' path is seen by cyclists to belong to them and whizz past at vast speeds without warning and most don't even have a bell, again t'is the law to have one!

Having said that I would not like to ride a bike on our roads now having seen many cyclists seriously cut up by a motorist, even the ones who do have lights and high viz gear! I think it's in Belgium where the cycle path is part of the pavement not part of the road, a lot safer I would think.
 
I have to say how disappionted I am...'some' of the attitudes in this thread stink to be quite honest. On the one hand in a previous post everyone is moaning saying how awful it is for us poor riders on the road and on the other hand we are saying how cross we get with cyclists...is this not the same attitude that we condem for not showing consideration to riders??????? Can we not see that when you are sat in a car getting stressed and cursing some cyclist - that has every right to be on the road - that is exactly how drivers feel when stuck behind us riders?????? Two wrongs don't make a right...and for those of us that are intolerant of cyclists...we are all users of the road and should respect and show patience for every other road user...then there would not be these problems.
Sorry, rant over and it was NOT aimed at anyone in particular either...now I will go away and hide!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with Pottamus on this one. I used to cycle to work regularly & often I had to leave the cycle path & cycle on the road due to parked cars, pedestrians walking 3/4 abreast & other ,far too frequent, random blockages. I'm willing to bet that the drivers who probably thought "why isn't the cow on the cycle path" didn't notice the blockage as it wouldn't affect them Even though I always wore hi-viz & had bright lights, stopped at lights etc I was treated far worse as a cyclist than as a horse rider - possibly because bikes don't kick!
 
I've only met one cyclist who ever showed concideration to me leading my equine (And I admit I was so suprised I forgot to say thank you toll they'd gone tight passed).One thing they don't have to worry about is that their cycle might jump sideways because they've seen a drinks carton blowing towards them---wish we had as many Bridlepaths and lottery money to pay for them as they do cycle tracks!
 
My OH is traffic officer for the highways agency and has loads of jackets, they do look similar to the police ones buy say highways agency on the back. I wonder if I could use one of those? hmmm
 
I don't think you need to wear a jacket that says anything on the back to be honest. I bought a 'workman' type flourescent jacket for Christmas and have been amazed at the difference it has made...drivers can really see you a lot sooner and slow down quicker and a couple have even stopped to comment on how good my jacket is!!! I recommend them whole heartedly.
 
the problem with alot of cycle lanes is that many of them are along pavements so you then have to cross the side road every time you come to a junction whereas if you were cycling along the road you would be able to keep going and have right of way. I used to have a real problem with this when I lived in Leeds so I ignored the cycle lanes and rode along the roads instead. Cycle lane are as badly planned as bridleways
 
im going to knock a cyclist off his bike before to long, had 3 near misses in one week so far! our yard is on a busy main road and you have to stick your nose out slightly to see whats coming, one day last week i was approaching the exit and just driving onto the path when out of nowhere this lad (late teens id say) comes haring along the path and nearly ended up on my bonnet! i keep forgetting about this lad flying past along the path until i nearly hit him each time, its not something i think about as i drive out of the yard at 8.30 each morning...i hope i never do hit him but im sure he shouldnt be on the path anywayand he rides to fast to stop suddenly.i think i will have to put a post it note on my dash saying remember the bike or words to that effect!
 
Me and my OH cycle a lot, and some of the drivers we have come across are stressed-out psychos!
Frequent incidents of overtaking and then turning left immediately are the worst. Once I nearly got badly hurt when this happened to me, and I was trying out cleats for the 3rd time (fellow cyclists will know!) and I couldn't unclip in time and fell over onto an A road... All because someone wanted to get into the garden centre 10 seconds faster??!!!!

Frankly, I am a considerate cyclist and wear all the right gear etc. Don't tar us all with the same brush! I've seen many a usually teenage boy being ridiculous on the road, but we are not all like this.
