.....have to rug them?

daft question I know....sorry, but I'm thinking of trace-clipping the young highland so I can do work with him over winter, he's already very hairy but doesnt do enough to justify a full-clip.......he's got a LW no fill he could have on if need be.

he's in at night, out for about 12 hours during the day and is a good doe-er.

Cheers peeps

Most of the natives at my yard are trace clipped and all them wear at least a rain sheet when it's cold/wet

I gave a bib clip to my welsh D last weekend and although it's been cold at night it was still really warm and sunny yesterday so I put her out naked and when I got her in she was as warm as toast. I dont think if you clip you have to rug and thats the end of it.

Thanks.....yes he has a MW also for when its really cold, and fleece and stable rugs.

Think I'll trace/bib clip him and put him out in the LW unless its really warm.......and as you say if its really bad/snowy he has the MW.

I know its a daft Q...I normally only fully clip my lad and then obviously he's rugged up until spring ( god, that seems a long way away

Well, I've given T (traditional cob in sig) a neck & bib and haven't rugged him yet because I know he will still be too hot as most of his hair is still on (he's a very 'warm' horse) and his loins are covered in thick fur, so he's ok. If I'd taken more off, such as a trace, I would be rugging him because he would be mostly naked and his vitals wouldn't be covered. Hope that helps

I'm thinking of starting with more of a bib clip....as he's only ever had his beard trimmed before and he didn't like that at all to start with, but he's ok now........and see how we go with that....if limbs still attached and I haven't had my head kicked in I will probably extend it lol x

You might need to rug him if he is in at night as when they are stabled they can't move about so much to keep warm.

My NF lives out and is chaser cliped and he has his LW turnout on - will move on to MW once it starts getting really cold.

lol, it's best to start with taking as little off as you can. T was only getting sweaty on his neck and getting rubbed by the longer hair around the girth area (he gets girth galls very easily, especially when he's shedding or has a long coat), hence the need to clip. But I only took off the essential bits so he'll still be warm when standing around out hunting/in the field.
