I am in a dilemma about joint supplements and don’t know what to feed for the best. My boy has one as a preventative on the vets recommendation, mainly because he is a well built horse (16.3 shire x) and he has windgalls all round that he had when I bought him, perhaps indicating he was worked hard in his earlier life. I used to use Suppleaze Gold, but stopped when I realised that the maintenance does only has low levels of the key ingredients. But I am still wondering if maybe I am wrong as a lot of people seem to have great success with it, and perhaps it is the combination of ingredients that works and the levels aren’t so crucial?

So if you do use SG, do you feed at the maintenance rate? If so, do you think it makes any difference to your horse?

Thanks
:)

I've always used it at the maintenance dose with great success, every horse i've tried it on has shown positive results within 7 days and thats without a loading dose too.
I've just started to use their human version for myself and again without a loading dose and on the lowest recommended dose have noticed the results, the pain in my knuckles has gone. I did forget to take it both days over the weekend and by Monday had some pain again - remembered to take it since and am now pain free. :)

I don't work for them by the way but I recommend them to lots of people as i've found it so good.

I feed it to my mare and give her slightly more than the maintenance amount as she had a back injury a few years ago.
I have noticed a difference in her and when I ran out, again, I noticed the difference.

Maggiesmum I looked on their website a few weeks back to see if they did a human one but couldnt find it. :(

I know you asked for people who use SG but I'd like to add my little bit too, if you don't mind ;-)

I give ArthriAid and it works really well.
We have a 14 year old with back trouble. She has a small dose and can move freely.
The 16 year old gets a tiny amount as he's just a little stiff. He used to be an endurance racer and has windgalls. He's great on a half dose.
The 24 year old who has just come to us has been started on the same and is moving so well that she can't resist a buck in the field and cantering on a hack!

I hope you find a solution that works for you and your horse. :-)

It's something I think all of them are guilty of, they advertise at the maintenance dose so it looks like a tub will last more days so I take those with a pinch of salt.

You are aiming for 10g of Glucosamine, 4g Chondroitin, and 10g of MSM so the main thing to check is the ratios which in Suppleaze gold I think are good and then up the dosage accordingly.

Thanks for the info and experiences guys :)

Snoopyinfrance - I did look at Arthriaid, but some of the ingredients are in quite low quanitites, but sounds from your experience that it might be worth another look.

Criso - I read about the 10, 10, 4 ratio, but to feed that would break my budget, I can manage 10,10 of gluc/msm but the 4g of chondroitin really puts the ££ up.

Oh if I only I had a crystal ball!!

I use suppleaze gold and love it. My boy has bone spavins and really used to suffer before I put him on this. He now needs no bute as the supplement does the job perfectly

I think that's why suppleaze gold isn't bad, the proportions are right so you don't overdo the msm and glucosamine to get the right level of chondroitin.

If you are looking at cheap and cheerful options Turmeric and/or rosehips are two herbs lots of people have success with. Cotswold Herbs sells both cheap but they have a flat postage rate however much you buy.
The other thing that is getting good press at the moment is green lipped mussel either on its own or as part of a supplement where it replaces the chondroitin. Maxaflex and nupafeed are two that I know of.
Not sure how it compares pricewise though.
