which studs would you look at and how much would you expect to pay

For example would you consider one of the big names like Hobgoblins and Twemlows or a smaller stud maybe that was local to you.
Do you think it needs to be a stud with an already established reputation with the right 'look' for attracting mare owners?

I would actually pick the best place for the individual stallion over big names and the attraction for mares personally. Like today I pop round to see Teds and he was having the time of his life out in the stallion paddock, i'd much rather have a happy horse over possibly attracting more mares because of how well known the stud is.

Gosh Volatis...........that is a great question............

Twemlows and Hobgoblins have excellent reputations and also have the mares coming into their stations. I know that a couple of years ago I spoke with Twemlows regarding Geneve and they fairly seem to push the stallions they have standing onto mare owners......well they need to as its their business also.......

I guess it depends on how big a market you are looking for and the kind of money you have available to pay to stable them at these establishments.......and whether you get a good return for your money.

We briefly had a stallion last year the prices were

£20 part livery a day including time on the horse walker (but sadly he was never groomed

£70 for jumping the phantom each time
plus VAT on everything

It was a very smart yard and quite well known, we did all the advertising for the stallion, shame we couldnt see it through our partner had a breakdown and the bussiness closed due to some serious personal problems she had and he was sold before he had a chance to get going, but i do believe he will be offered at stud next year.

I would go for somewhere like Langaller, where lots of people visit and will view your stallion.
It should have a good reputation re fertility percentages too, and offer good keep.
I think a bigger stud seems to have a better image somehow, standing one on a small yard isn't as attractive to people looking, who can then view perhaps six at one place.

I think so much would depend on your type of stallion and the mares you are hoping to attract. For something with more general appeal, a warmblood for example, i would probably look for one of the bigger centres and hope to generate enough interest to at least contribute to the livery.

For a more niche market, where people who specifically want your type or breed of horse will seek you out, a smaller quieter yard might be a better choice and more economical. If I ever have a stallion it will be of a very specific type and this is the kind of arrangement I would personally prefer, and know people who work this way with specific breedlines of natives or even sought after lines of TB for racing.

TBH it is extremely unlikely I would ever be able to buy a horse to stand at a major national stud, there are people who have been breeding for years who are much further ahead in the game, so I would be aiming at a niche market.

Thank you for those thoughts.
The stallion I was thinking of is a warmblood, so I was just trying to weigh up the pros and cons of standing him at a smaller local stud or a more expensive major centre. With the cost of livery for a stallion very difficult to know if he could generate enough interest and coverings to cover costs (not only livery but purchae, advertising etc)
Its half a pipe dream half a serious thought at the moment
