much would you pay for one at 16yo who is straightforward and jumping 1.20's?

This isn't our boy but I've spotted another who is similar in some ways (age, grade) and I wondered if she is realistically priced. The reason I'm asking for help is that I think I would pay more for experience and reliability for my children than some others might and I may be towards the generous end of the price scale.

So, 16hh, 16yo mare who will jump up to 1.20's, hacks and is straight - how much is a fair price?

hmm.. i hate posting on these first, encase i'm completely wrong :p :D haha... buuuut. i would guess around £6-8k due to age... BUT i have seen others similar advertised at £10-12k... but i agree with you in that i would rather pay more for a safe grade a for my children (if i had any...i only turn 18 in 2 weeks! lol)

Hmmm well this could be a mile out as have never been in the market for this type of horse but at 16 and a horse rather than a pony which I think have a much longer shelf life I would say no more than £4k - £5k

Only exception would be was if I knew the horses full history and it was low mileage and not been hammered. In which case I would be prepared to pay more.

I would say about 6k.. My friends have one similar for sale but its 12yrs and advertised at 7k ono, but these horses im sure are worth their weight in gold so I think the prices do vary alot!

If it's purely a 1.20m horse I'd say around £8000, if it's capeable of bigger tracks then definately more.

see to me 1.20s aren't that big...well yes they are big but a lot of horses can jump them quite competently if that makes sense! so with that in mind if horse is otherwise sound and safe i reckon around 8k...as you say safety is presumably a big consideration if its for your children. if it was a horse capable of jumping 1.30s and 1.40s then a heck of a lot more :)

Honestly, I would not pay more than about 4k for such a horse. Before I get shouted down completely, a horse that can jump 1.20s is not that rare, and 16 is getting on a bit which would bring the price down for me.

I also know that you can find similar horses [Grade A or B SJers, sound, jumping up to 1.20/1.30/1.40s, aged 12-16] for anywhere between 3.5 - 7k, a quick look on horse quest and you can find quite a few within that price range that all fit the criteria of this horse. My friend also sold a horse like this, stunning Grade B, really well schooled, very sound, jumped up to 1.40s, rising 13 - for under 5k - and I know that there was nothing wrong with him!

I'm hoping the same stays true when I am in a position to buy again :)!

I think that spiral is right to a point and the difference in prices that have come up reflect the one thing I don't know about this horse which is how straight and easy it is.

A 16yo that can jump 1.20 with a professional man and has always been in that type of home would have a different likelihood of performing well with an amateur 15yo, and one that has always jumped with teenagers or small ladies might be expected to be somewhat easier. Huge generalisations I know, but value in the schoolmaster market I think comes down to how much of a schoolmaster they really are and without seeing the horse it is hard to know.

I think rarity also has an impact on value. We have a 16yo grade a who is forgiving around 1.30 and 1.30 jump offs (ie 1.40) in a snaffle with a 15yo and I really don't think there are many like him out there. How much this other horse is like him we won't know without meeting her.

about 5 years ago i brought exactly that type of horse but he was 18 not 16 for 3.5k.
he won alot, only up to 115-120, but only jumped on surfaces, gentle as a lamb & easy to do (so long as you didnt stand too near the practise fence!!)

I think wonkey donkey on here was selling her grade A roger a while back - not sure if he's gone though? I don't know how much she'd want for him, but I know he was sold as a 13/14 year old for £125k  (not to wonkey donkey though!)

He is 16, competes up to 1.30 (maybe more?) and is just an all around ace horse to be around. I used to know him with one of his previous owners, and he is such a great horse :)

i know someone that paid £50k for a 14 yr old grade A (had jumped 1.50s in his time) but now back at 1.15/1.20 - within a year he was written off with arthritis in hocks, did a leg etc so be really careful to check vet certs etc.

i agree with these, my 14.3 pings 1.35 and wants to go higher all the time! and has jumped 120 tracks etc so i would expect an A to be jumping around the 140cms+ but then again as others have said maybe its only jumping up to 120 now
