Right....I have decided I need transport for the beasties.....I would like to venture a bit further afield to go to shows etc ...but nothing major, nowt long distance and mostly in the summer.

I can't tow with my car (Golf 1.9TDI) but I dont want to sell it, I lurve it....its fast, cool and cheap to run and insure.

SO.....do I buy a second hand trailer and cheapo 4x4 to use for horse-stuff only and keep the Golf...

OR do I sell the Golf, and buy a flash 4X4 for everyday/horse useage??

I'm a bit concerned re the latter option as I do lots of short journeys and was worried re fuel costs?

Thoughts, ponderings and a slap in the face please.

This afternoon I have coffee and iced buns. With a cherry on top before you ask MrsM

I would keep the golf and buy a cheapish towing vehicle and trailer.

We did that and it works out cheaper than driving around in a 4 x 4 all the time.

Happy shopping

I would stick with the Golf for everyday/clean driving and go for the best 4x4 and trailer you can afford.

can I have mine with fresh cream too!

Ok we have a nice 4x4 cos my dad is rubbish with cars if they go wrong. but neither of my parents (whose car it is) work far from home and if dad is working further away work get him a van.

Only trouble with old ones is, ....if you are not using them regularly I don't think it does them any good and its mightily frustrating if they do start going wrong when you want to go somewhere. Also poss increased chance of breaking down with your horses then.

can you go for somewhere in the middle!

good 4x4's for towing are generally mitsubishis (pajero's, showguns etc) some people like nissan navaras/pathfinders etc, toyota landcruisers are also good.........

ermmm not sure what else

Older landrover discoverys are going very cheaply at the moment and should serve your purpses well- you can buy a decent used trailer for a couple of thousand pounds too so that should set you up

The most frustrating cost as far as I can see is the tax that the disco (or any 4x4) will incur

I would keep the golf and use the money it would cost to get a 4 by 4 and a trailer and get a nice 3.5 ton lorry instead!

Actually.....re the lorry thing, I did think about that, saw one advertised locally for about 2K and I could keep it at the yard. So the drive wouldnt be cluttered wih 2 cars and a 4x4.

Hmmm.....see you've all just come along for the coffee and cakes and confused me even more.

Alternative...OH also has a transit van that hasnt been used for a couple of years...I could cut holes in the roof and load the horses in that.....

Anyone want to swap a Transit van for a horsebox?

Second hand trailer, cheep 4x4 but something bullet proof and will start first time, 2.8 SWB Pajero (its the import) rather than the shugun, there always in better nick, you can pick them up cheap now, thirsty things but brilliant towing machines and will never let you down.

Keep you car to used for everday use, only use the 4x4 for towing and as a work horse etc

Etd, lorries are great but really you need spend a certain amount to invest in a half decent one, if you do that you might as well have something that is average sized, in which case you might need to take your class 2, as some of those small lorries don't have enough head room for large horses, plus if there standing half the time, that is when you get problems, so unless your using it alot, then I'd stick with trailer.

I would say keep the golf and get 3.5t lorry instead of a 4x4 and trailer. However if you did decide to go down the trailer route I throughly recommend a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 for towing - I had one before I got my lorry and it was fab !!!!!!

I am actually having the same dispute at the moment and keep swinging between lorry and little car or decent 4x4 and trailer.

Pro trailer/ 4x4 - omly one set of maintance costs, no seperate insurance, tax, etc and what is the point of paying for a vehicle you only use at best once a week?

Pro Lorry - potentially safer and can have a little cheap run around car which is cheap to insure and low on disel.

I am really not sure which is better, but the OH is convineced a decent 4 x4 and hired trailer is the way forward.

We have done the trailer and lorry thing. Have sold the lorry as it was costing us around £1500 to keep on the road every year (plating,MOT,tax, insurance etc) and the repair bills were slowly creeping up apart from the diesel it guzzled!! The kids weren't doing as much PC so it just wasn't getting the use so started to be more unreliable. So back to a trailer for us.

If I'm not to late can I have a cake as I have had a really bad day.....

I drive a P reg discovery 300 tdi - cost us £2000 i think.

I only commute 7 miles each way for work, and horses are 10 miles each way (tho only 3 times a week), plus other bits and pieces of mileage.

I get 28 - 30 mpg for normal driving, and 18 - 20 for towing.

Insurance was about £260 this year i think and road tax was 180.

when we did our sums it worked out cheaper for this than running 2 cars and a 4x4. the other car is a fiesta 1.25l petrol.

I'm just going from my little 3.5 tonne box to 4x4 and trailer. Seemed silly to be paying to keep a horsebox and a 2nd car both of which aren't used too much! Added to that my mare who the box was bought for has given birth to a huge foal who is set to grow bigger than the box!!

We've just bought an Isuzu trooper (excellent vehicles and can tow 3.3 tonnes!) got it on ebay!!!

If you get a Disco, make sure you check ALL the bits you cant see (under the carpet in the boot ect) as older models are notorius for rotting out!
