My farrier once kicked my horse in the belly, but he had had a REALLY bad day and my horse was making things worse. So although I was fuming at the time I let him off and I have to say he's NEVER done anything remotely like that since. But then I think my farrier is one in a million! I've had rough farriers before and I just moved on until I found a good one, at the time I had a very very difficult pony and only my current farrier could shoe her as he was the only one who was patient rather than rough with her. Really though it depends on what the horse did to deserve a smack, farriers have to protect themselves.
My farrier does it all the time. I am glad he makes my horses mind. He quickly pats them gently and speaks calmly to them afterward and has little trouble after that
I'd find a new farrier immediately - there is no way i would EVER tolerate a farrier hitting my horse for it pulling its leg away, not ever and the same for raising his voice - Rock is a sensitive soul and my farrier is brilliant, just takes his time and stays calm.
Not much you can do about the incident now but if it was to happen again I would drop the said farrier like a tonne of bricks, just no need for it, yes one smack - if deserved - then back to the job in hand, but not 4 times.....
Theres been no need for hitting the horse 4 times yes the once but not 4. Sound like he farrier got a bit angry with your horse. the only time i have seen a farrier (not mine) hit a horse is when it went to kick him, Got to say my farrier is a bit of a wimp and has never hit i horse when i have been there n i have had him for 4 year now.
When I was 10 my farrier was on holiday so his son came to shoe my pony. He had no patience whatsoever and hit my pony with his rasp. I drew myself up to my full height (I'm only 5'5 now, so must have been tiny then!) and ordered him off of the yard! And complained to his dad when he was back!!!
I would not tolerate ANYBODY hitting any of my horses, no if's, no but's, it would not be allowed to happen. But then again I guess I am lucky as they are all pretty well behaved because I have done lots of groundwork with them.
Tell your farrier to poke it and find somebody horse friendly instead.
My farrier has told my horse off once, because he bit him - got carried away when he was nuzzling his back, but he didnt hit him just shouted...i would definatly get a new one if he did hit him though....Our mae has back problems and the farreir sypathised with her and when she pulled he leg away he left her for a little bit and went back, i think this was really good as he didn't want her to be scared of him and not want her to go near him again

the thing is he didnt hit once, he hit 4 times, hard.
horse did not deserve that at all

I think that 4 times was too much. I have had a few farriers at different yards. My horse can be stiff in one of his hinds and one farrier in particular would get very vocal and physical with him despite my horse's obvious discomfort. I now have a farrier that is far more laid back and suits my horse very well. Having said that I am not averse to my horse being told off with a short sharp smack if he did something bad (lets say like trying to kick). But if he is getting punished for being uncomfortable that is a different thing. I would not be happy with this reaction from your farrier which seemed OTT. But if this was truly a one-off then I might see what happens over the next few months and perhaps give him the benefit of the doubt.
Last time my farrier trimmed one of my youngsters, it behaved dreadfully, the farrier smacked it and my friend and I both shouted 'Well smacked!'
But perhaps I'm just mean?

he was very very jump for the rest of the day, i was too shocked at the time to say anything but i really wish i had
really like my farrier & he does a good job but that was a side i did not like, one smack is enough, hell he got a rollicking & a wallop from me,but he took it too far
Hi Asbo
It's a judgement call, isn't it, as to what is appropriate and what is excessive.
You are the only one that can make that call, as you were there....you are obviously uncomfortable with it or you wouldn't have posted so perhaps you need to change farrier.
Good luck with pony and feet!

I'd sack him. I am wary of our farrier as I think if I wasn't there he might take it too far, so I make sure I'm present where possible, but punches to the ribs aren't on. A slap, perhaps, but no more.

My farrier has also kicked my horses belly due to a really really bad day and like yours he is one in a million and i let him off because he never gave me a reason to doubt him before or after the incident, just a bad day!
my old farrier threatened my youngster with a rasp and said he's smash his teeth in, I informed him I would return the favour if he so much as touched my horse and changed farriers, was a nightmare trying to find a new one! I don't mind my horse being told off if he is naughty, but I won't tolerate aggression and excessive force!
My farrier hit Axey once on the neck, but he was being naughty and afterwards he was really well behaved, and funnily enough has never messed about with the farrier again.
In that instance it was reasonable and justified, but I wouldn't have been so tolerant of it otherwise.
My farrier has once, and he was quite right to do so. It taught a young horse a sharp quick lesson and some manners and saved him from a nasty accident.
If it were for nothing, then I would not allow it.
