if your going to have a horse

To all of those saying tying the haynet low.... I went to the yard last night, to do don, and my friends 2. i got there, and one of hers was standing looking over the stable door. said hello, and then went off for a drive. Got back, and she was stll in the same place. Nothing out of the ordinary so far! Sorted out don and her other one, went to this ones door and asked her to move back, which she didnt. asked again, and told her not to be so rude. It was then i looked down and saw she had put her foot through a low tied net. the net was right up to her arm pit, tried to undo it but couldnt so had to cut the net off of her. her stable was quite clean, with poo's where she was standing, so dont know how long she had been like that. luckily she hadnt panicked, and walked out fine,...but thats why haynets should be tied low!

Why are people getting arsey about what op said about riding in trackies...that's obviously not the main thing she was getting at!

Too many people who don't have a clue about horses get them and it's not fair on the horses. It's not hard to learn the basics of horse care!

I feed my horse from haynets tied low, personally i find its better for him to be eating in a more natural position, but i have previously used a hay bar as well as attempting to feed from the floor but have found if using either of these to methods that the hay ends up everywhere in his stable and he doesn't end up eating much. Instead i invested in elimanets with very small holes so that it dramatically reduces the chance of him getting his foot stuck in the haynet, works well, used this method for over a year and had no issues what so ever, and have a much happier horse in the mornings than i ever did when fed from the floor - as he wont drink water once hay is in it (very fussy) and would be hungry as he spent the night trashing the hay through his bed

Just because you have not had an accident yet does not mean you won't in the future

Agree with this reply fully. Its an accident waiting to happen sorry to say

Can honestly say i've never ridden in trackie bottoms, i cannot fathom how it is more comfortable than jods but then i'm an old fuddy duddy who prefers clothes to fit where they touch but daughter has never ridden in trackies either, jeans yes but not trackies and never in trainers even when i was young and foolish, wellies may have been the worst i rode in all those yrs ago, red ones at that!

My haynets are tied low if i ever use them but my ponies are all barefoot and if they actually managed to get a foot in their miniscule holed nets then it would be a miracle, even a falabella would struggle with my nets - LOL!

I also never ride mine without a thorough groom but then i have OCD and anything other than clean is not acceptable to me but then i do everything within my power to keep them clean in the first place, they are the most comfortable ponies living out 24/7 but rarely caked in mud with well fitting rugs on, hoodies (no face!) legs oiled, tails plaited and in bags so to be honest a quick dandy of the bits that show and they are ready to go anyway.

To be fair if they were not worked then they would have full coats, hairy as larry, muddy as larks and happy as pigs in poop but being as they are then anything to save time when i can ride is a bonus to me in winter....currently trying to convince daughter that riding in gale force winds is fine, i'm not wasting my holiday - LOL!
