If your horse lost a shoe...

Ok picture yourself in this scenario ... Your horse has lost a front shoe , it currently has to were Egg Bars as it is a cripple

Farrier can't put it back on till Thursday she was shod 4 weeks ago ..

Would you turnout or keep her in until she could have it put back on ?

To turn her out it is a 10 minute walk over stones and she's not got the *best* hoof quality

I'm just worried because she doesn't do hot weather well (high maintenance - of course!) and its going to be warm

i would turn out. pop to your local tack shop and see if they have a boot you can put on it. they are about £11 depending on what type you have. will be as good as her having a shoe on and will stop her chipping any hoof off.

They don't have any (well they said they could order one for arrival Wednesday...

I am so paranoid she is going to chip her foot and damage it as she has very little growth so the farrier always points out that if she did any damage to it she would be v. difficult to put the shoe back on , also he galloping about in the field with only one front shoe won't do her feet any good would it ? Or is that me being VERY paranoid?

You could get a poultice boot that is what i do with my mare who is exactly the same. Then you can get her to the field and she should damage her hoof on the way.

Use a nappy with cotton wool and vet wrap.

We have several horses at my yard who are prone to losing shoes with terrible feet and this works a treat.

She may still feel the stones slightly but it wont chip her hoof.

Turn her out using some kind of protection on hoof to get her to her field and then leave her out. No matter how high maintenance she is she is a horse and will hang out in her field quite happily

- and if she is out 24/7 probably won't do any galloping around anyway - nothing here is managing anything more than a verrrrrry slow walk in the heat - too busy sunbathing......

Sorry to read that the farrier can't get to you sooner. I would if I could not get a hoof boot I think turn her back out with the hoof dressed in nappy held on with carpet tape (comes in black or silver)( can get at most DIY stores) it is much stonger than vet wrap does not wear away so quickly. Good luck hope that she does not chip to much away

We have a horse that literally will not go in a stable, he hates confined spaces. He also has bad feet. If his feet get bad just put some padding, then vetwrap on, then some duct tape on the bottom just to keep it all on

nappy and duct tape but try get hold of a hoof boot should nappy come off otherwise when going to get her in go armed with more nappies and duct tape. If she has little fott to work with now anything off could mean not being able to get the shoe on at all.

If she is sore then i would pad and leave in! My TB was like a cripple (hopping lame) with no front shoe on and if i had to wait for the farrier then he had to stay in. I've never found anything that will stay on the foot and protect it if the horse has a hooly round the field, especially if it rains. Better safe than sorry imo, especially with her history
