would they be fine while riding under saddle (walk/trot) but not ok if you were riding them bareback (walk/trot)?

its a problem i have right now and not sure what it means???!!

My horse's back has been sore and I won't take the risk of riding her. I'll take her out long reining to encourage her to stretch BUT putting weight on an already damaged back is never going to help it to heal IMHO.

this could depend on how long the horse has been sore. The horse would compensate with other muscles and then most of their frame would end up sore / tight.

Have you had her checked out by a physio or anything?

My daughters pony has a sore back, discovered as after 8 months of being the perfect pony she started bucking and cow kicking going into canter.
I had the vet out straight away who after a thorough examination and watching her antics being ridden diagnosed a lower back problem.

His advice was not to ride her at all, but to work from the ground. She was given bute for a week and I long lined her and lunged her in walk and trot.
She's no better so he's now advised me to get a physiotherapist out to see her, to take a good look at her back and the way forward will be decided after she has been.

So my advise is vet/back person............but no way should you be riding the horse with or without a saddle x

its not the end of the world!! my horse has extensive long term back and muscular problems, and as i manage him properly we can jump school and do anything we want.

id advise getting a back person out, or a proffessional qualifed equissage practisioner to look at it, and they can both fix the back as much as possible and show u exercises to do long term.

a properly fitting saddle should do no harm when the back is strong enough, and bareback will be no problem at all. exercises such as leg yielding and shoulder in every time u ride will also strengthen the back up.
feel free to pm me as i've had to deal with these problems for years, and no matter how bad the damage, there is life after if its just muscular!!!

story is all was fine till winter coat came thro and i noticed white hairs. got a saddler out and he added flocking to saddle and sent it back to me (didnt refit it just sent in the post) rode horse in saddle and she was fine walk/trot hated canter tho. got saddler back out did some more reflocking again horse ok walk/trot and a bit better in canter but still not right. saddler said saddle fine and that horse needed to get used to new flocking (hum?)

so took her for a ride the next day fine walk trot really soft in her outline didnt really like canter still. when i got back i noticed ridge marks like her saddle had caused pressure marks.

so not using saddle have different saddler coming monday but in mean time have been lunging and riding bareback but horse doesnt want to go forward into trot now ears back etc but was fine when i last rode in saddle????

havent had her back checked at the mo as think its the saddle but that doesnt ring true if shes misbehaving when riding her bareback

what does it all mean??????

It could mean the saddle has made her sore and when you ride her bareback, even though the saddle isn't there anymore she has soreness in her back from when you used the saddle.
If so, a rest and a better fitting saddle should cure it.
But if not, then maybe the saddle has caused some harm and she needs back person.
I'd give her a bit of time off to allow any soreness to go.

It helps to have the background, none of us knew how or why your horses back was sore to start with, so most would just advise vet/back person x
