I know what I know, and other people know what they know. What they don't know is what other people know.
Part of the reason I left this forum was because I became exasperated at all the duff advice handed out.
The 90% comes from my own experience, you won't find it on Google (do people really believe anything they read on the internet?).
This post was started due to the 'hibiscrub/mare in foal thread'. Now to me it is obvious the vet was using a lubricant, and the poster was simply mistaken (nothing wrong with that). Now if the poster had said 'what are you doing/f#ck you playing at' at the time the vet would have explained with no embarassment caused.
V....I have missed you on the forum SO much it's unreal!
For the record, I will/do quiz my vets on every aspect of the treatment they are recommending or the illness they may/may not believe my horse to have. I'm like that. I'm not scared to open my mouth and ask questions.
Sadly, some people are not quite so well equipped to deal with people they feel are in authority and are happy enough to let the vet do something or prescribe something without giving it a second thought (until after the vet has left) too "scared" (bad choice of word) to question them. They trust in their judgement.
Possibly, these people then mention their vet visit to fellow liveries/horsey friends and get a reaction from them questioning their vet's course of action.....which leads them to asking on here because they have doubts and daren't, for whatever reason, contact the vet for reassurance.
"do people really believe anything they read on the internet"
Yes. I do believe some things I read on the internet
For example I believed Wikepedia when it told me horses have four legs, two ears.. silly me
I think that its fair enough for people to become insulted when somebody as good as tells them they don't deserve their horse
Most people on here dedicate their lives to their animals and so want to the best they can for them- and if that means asking for advice on here then so be it.
However it seems that you are well known for these sorts of posts so I am not one of the offended. Interesting point in some ways!

Nobody here is professing to know everything, there would be no point posting on the forum if you already knew it all. Some know more than others and everybody has different opinions, I doubt anyone is so naive as to take everything on here as gospel.
It may be obvious to you that is was lubricant but maybe spare a thought for the poor owner whose mare lost a foal. Could it be that maybe she is very distressed by the situation and is clutching at straws looking for blame? We all get very worried about our neds and sometimes it clouds our judgement.
Are you saying that this has never happened to you? I was a mess when Monty was ill since, suprisingly enough, I am quite attached to my horse.
i think there are alot of people on here with a wealth of knowledge, vets, farriers, dentist people with equine degrees and people with many years exp round horses, people can hand out advice that by no means you have to take , i think the whole point of a forum is to get others opinions and compare them, by no means believe or put in to practice everything you read just pick and choose the bits you find valuable?

Are you calling my advice duff? I actually can't remember the last time I gave advice and was told it was duff
I do have a few duff 'opinions' but they have never been advising anyone of anything. If I'm not sure I keep my mouth closed and read the other responses in the hope that one of them will make sense and I'll learn a little something.
I think you are probably lucky you have been away from the forum .... the last 3 months I have been doing just that . Asking advice and opinions from people who have had similar problems.
I don't/didn't have the best relationship with my vet and however much I asked I wouldn't get the answer in laymans terms because he preffered to deal with my YO/an adult.
I guess that is why the forum is here partly and you have to sift through every post to find the genuine advice.
I have been thinking about changing my name to avoid some of my infamy but I don't think it would last, especially if I kept my signature of the ginger one

Infamy, infamy......they've all got it ...in for you, mate
JustHelen.....god knows, some people like shitstirring methinks
I judged at the weekend, looked at the sheets beforehand and saw a Princess Sparkle in the list and sh*t myself that it was you.
Luckily for me, a little welsh pony and small kid that were harmless
so I was safe.
To OP, missed your sound advice and yes you are right, but often we come on here to get others views, sympathy and have they had experience of what the vet said and the outcome.
I grill my vet to the nineth degree (poor bugger) but in times of stress, not all goes in, it is hard to do this when you are in tears and trying to support a sick horse and a heartbroken OH, and sometimes being able to type questions rather than speak to someone is easier.
A fair point, after all the vets can get it wrong sometimes so a whole whirl wind of extra worry can be caused on something that could actually be rather simple, before you know it everyone has written your horse off lol and its only fit the knacker man.
Can also be get twisted with word of mouth and if your horse is potentially going up for sale or out completing it can cause unwanted talk and problems, vets should explain things fully, its what you pay them for.
However I do feel it helps to talk about things to other people that have experienced the same problem, specially if you are going through a stressful time and you can exchange advice etc, it only takes one person to mention something and it could indeed help your horse.
Ok, controversial but a fair point I think, if there's something you're not sure of when any professional is dealing with your horse I believe it's your responsibility to ask to make sure you're aware of what's happening & are happy with it.
However, as for asking for advice on a public forum, surely that's what it's here for?!
None of us know everything there is to know about horses, even the 10% who should be allowed near horses! Unfortunately there will always be some that think they know more than they do & those that would rather ask these people instead of the experts & the best thing to do is leave them to it & don't let it wind you up!!!!!!
i always talk more than i should to my vet - must get very annoyed with my chatter and questions!!
however i also enjoy getting advice on things from this forum, and the odd "controversial" post will entertain me for a while at work too!! I have had some good advice off here, same as i have had from horsey ppl in RL, i find the more ppl you talk to the more u learn. Whats important it as long as my horse is happy and healthy who cares where i learnt what i know!!!
