..keeping your horse became a struggle for finance reasons, would you get another job part time, loan him/her out(Untill you where sorted financially) or just sell up!

Definitely a part time job and maybe a loaner to cover the extra days I would have to work.... Selling the horse would be the very last option!

I would live in a tent i a field before I gave up my horse!

Seriously though, if someone finds themselves in this position, there are lots of ways to save money. May be move to a cheaper livery, or sit down an dhonestly assess what money goes where.

If you look around you will see very high earners who have no money, and people on very modest incomes who can always find money and enjoy a good lifestyle. I know people on the dole who manage to keep their horses and keep them well.

Even someting like switching to a less thirsty car can save enough money on HP/fuel/insurance per year to keep a horse well.

I got a part-time job in the evenings so I could keep my horse, sometimes its a bit of a struggle leaving one job to got straight to another and I don't get to see him on the 3 evenings I work, just in the mornings. Recently have been thinking if it is all worth it, but am sure I will keep on doing it for as long as necessary. One benefit is I get a staff discount card for the store I work at so cheap clothes.

I'm in hat position at the moment. We bought a house in December that needed loads more work on it than we thought, so we are skint at the minute. Once the house is done and we can remortgage we'll be fine but until then I'm working weekends as well as Mon - Fri. I just do a few hours each day on another yard - it brings in a few more pennies, I make new friends and I quite enjoy it so it's ok

I'd never give up my horses

Selling would be my very last resort and I would definately do everything in my power to keep my horse. In fact I am currently in a situation where my circumstances have changed and I am having to look for somewhere to live, but by being completely honest about where my money goes I have worked out that if I lived in the town centre I would save so much on my travel that I would probably be financially better off even with adding an extra 10 mins to my drive to the stables.

If necessary I would get an additional job to cover costs and perhaps a sharer to help out on the days I would be working.

Ditto.

Couldnt even contemplate selling/sharing my horse...she is 20yr old retired tb...not easy either (never has been!)...and she is wonderful...at a yard that is brilliant for both of us but its expensive as everything in life is!!!
I am struggling so am selling everything I can get my hands on. Have accummulated so much horsey gear over 20 yrs...so am selling most of that now except what I definitely need for my mare throughout the year. Some of it is brand new and not used even...
I work full-time, due to personal reasons couldn't get another job as well...
Also selling lots of my own stuff ie. clothes...ebay/car booting. I am amazed at what stuff you can find to sell.
My friend just emptied his shed and got £600 over a weekend...he said it was total tat but it still went.

know this feeling well,

I work two evenings a week in a pub on top of my 9-5 job. I also have wonderful sharers for each of the beasties. And I tighten the belt in all areas when needed.
What isn't helping is that I am doing the courses for the stage 2 and PTT (with a view to getting the AI) and that leaves me very short, but you have to speculate to accumulated so fingers crossed that i pass those

It would depend on the horse to be honest..... If it was a horse in a million that I could never replace then anything other than sell.....

If for any reason there was doubt as to whether it was one in a million and could maybe be replaced with another more suitable one at a later date, then maybe I would be more tempted to sell up and start afresh.

All depends on horse.....
