would be interested to know what people think the minimum height of pony would be safe to travel with the breast bar at its lowest, normal, setting without any modifications? thanks.
The smallest I travel is 11.1 and imo the breast bar would be too high without modification at this height. I'm sure there are plenty of people who travel smaller ponies but I definately wouldn't. Mine has been modified but only the front bars. Its not expensive to do.
Depends where the bar brackets have been set in the first place. Our IW was used for horses by the original owner, but we bought extra brackets and set them at the bottom, so we could take the 11.2. Someone asked us where we got our brackets (they are 3 heights each side) as their daughter was getting a 16h horse (previously 13.2 and something smaller than that before then) and they needed to move the brackets or add extra ones higher up.
I used to travel Bianco in with Arnie - she is 10.3 and its a 510. I put her in facing backwards and tie her to the back brackets. I would rather she landed on her bum if anything went wrong.
I dont travel her regularly and I'm very very wary when she's in.
I have also seen a good idea where a section of rubber matting was hung from the bar to block the gap.
Tbh though, the new brackets are only about a tenner each and I just never got round to fitting them
my 11h 1" welshie travels ok at lowest height but it looks far from comftable for him, hoping to get own trailer this year so i can have breast bar,tie rings, partition & breech bars that match his needs rather than hireing what we can & having to make do for him.
although to be honest his fave position to travel in is flat out asleep on his side.
