Looking for a trailer to go with our new (to us!) Discovery and would like advice please :-).

I'll be travelling one horse of max 500kg, probably with the partition out. Very rarely I'll be taking two horses - the other with a max of 600kg probably. OH will be towing and he has his B+E.

I'd like a new trailer and am currently looking at the Ifor 511 and Bateson Deauville. Max budget of £6000. Any thoughts/ideas/recommendations on these?

The Bateson is quite a 'budget' trailer, but extremely well made for the money. They also have neat touches like built-in tack lockers and hitching mirrors.
Having experience of both, I much prefer the Bateson in functionality, and they are less rattly too.

I don't find my 511 rattles at all, not compared to the 510 and love it.
My mother has a Batson, think it's an Ascot, and that's a very nice trailer too. Seem well made and smooth ride. It depends on what features are important to you really. I prefer the back top doors on the Ifor because you can shut one half whilst travelling. I think the Bateson has an inbuilt saddle locker which looks great and better than the mobile Tack Pack that Ifor do.
Sorry not much help but a couple of points to consider maybe!

Before I had my lorry I had a Discovery & pulled a Bateson Deauvulle Trailer. They are great. They are built well, tow beautifully & don't rattle like Ifors do. The trailer is very airy & inviting for the horse so I never had difficulty loading. It has a couple of saddle racks at the front that are really useful. The ramp also opens on the nearside so in an emergency you will of load onto the footpath & not into the road. If you ever need advice or parts Bateson are extremely helpful. If I went back to a trailer I would buy a Bateson again. :)

I wrote in a recent post that we have the bateson ascot and having had 2 ifors in the past, I prefer the bateson. Very smooth ride, and the tack locker at the front and the shelf above it, are very useful additions that the ifor doesn't have. If you buy direct from the bateson factory, you will get a good discount on new, think it's. 7.5%?

I wouldn't call the Bateson a "budget" trailer at all. I actually think they're much better than Ifors. I love our Ascot, think they're about £5k brand new. We've had ours for years and they've improved it a lot since then. They're nice and light trailers too for towing. The only thing I wish is that we'd got the type with the American doors so I could close one side of the top door (like you can with Ifors), our one just has one big top folding up door so when travelling youngsters for example, I have to either be brave and leave the whole top door open or close the whole thing up.

I loved my Bateson Deauville when I had a trailer. Horses always travelled well in it. I also liked the fact that with the hitching mirror it was so easy to hitch up plus liked being able to see from the car what the horses where up to through the large front window.

I found when I borrowed a friend's new 511, it was a nice trailer but drove me mad where to put store things and where to tie up a haynet plus the fact you are not meant to tie a horse up to them outside

My Deauville had a folding two saddle rack with a sturdy cover and I could safely fit buckets and water container there underneath as well as my saddle rather than have them in the 4x4 boot.

The other plus at that time, it was easy to find my trailer in a sea of Ifors at a show although nowadays there is a lot more variation

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Really helpful :-).

Looks like the Bateson is a clear winner - how do most horses react to the 'step up' rather than having a ramp? Or would I be better off getting the little ramp as well as the barn doors?

I have a bateson Danville, it's great! I don't know where you are based but if you can get to their factory in Cheshire it's worth a visit. I had extra windows put in the front of mine and the pony loves it. I can't comment on the step up, mine has a ramp, I'd definitely recommend one though x.

I've got a Fautras with barn doors and I have to say that my ponies MUCH prefer it to having a ramp. Even previously difficult loaders go in quite happily.

Had a Bateson Ascot with the boston doors, all of my horses walked on no issue, much prefer trailers without a ramp, easier :)
Really regret selling mine, miss it so much.

We had a bateson ascot and it was great v light towed super even with 2 large horses in. I dislike the ifors , the old styled looked better quality but the newer ones 506/511 although look nicer look flimsy ! We we decided to upgrade we looked at new trailers/7.5t box a and 3.5t boxes and decided to part x our bateson for an equi-sport 3.5t box. Best decision ever but still if I had to go back to a trailer it would be a bateson ... No brainer!
