Hi, can somebody confirm this for me please. Getting myself in a state working out GVWs, MAMs etc etc!!

Anyway, I thought an Ifor 505 (it's about 1995) had an unladen weight of 905kg. But on its chassis plate it seems to say it's 1170kg.

Does that sound right? I don't know if it's because it's got an ali floor (though that was fitted retrospectively)...

Am I reading the plate correctly - that the top figure is its MAM and then the two figures underneath are both the unladen weights???
 
I've just bought a 2008 classic 505 model and confirmed with the dealer that the weight is 907kg. I don't think it will be 1170kg.

MAM = 2340
Axle weights
1170 + 1170 = 2340
 
Thank you all! Oh that's embarrasing, I hadn't even thought that 2 x 1170 was half 2340! That makes absolute sense and therefore the 905kg unladen weight also now fits in. Thanks!
 
Actually, whilst I'm on a roll..! But this probably needs a new thead as it's a bit if a different question - as far as I thought I'd read, your tow car maximum braked towing weight has to be more than your trailer's MAM (not just more than the actual weight you're towing). But on the Ifor website it definitely says the opposite: http://www.iwt.co.uk/customer-care/...towing-laws/show/can-i-still-tow-this-trailer

Any thoughts as to what's really correct?

Tis a myth MTW is calculated using actual trailer weight and actual towing vehicle weight .MAM legally only affects unbraked towing weights and drivers with no E entitlement when they are limited to 3500 MAM vehicle plus trailer.
 
There is no law or rule which states that the towing capacity of a vehicle has to be able to accommodate a trailer plated MAM

Plenty of myths on this especially on the internet !!
 
It's so hard to find out - all the threads on here seem to suggest the opposite, obviously big urban myth! DVLA website is useless, Ifor seem the most helpful. Thanks so much for your help. It makes a big difference when looking at/deciding on vehicles.

Arrgh, just read on AA website: "The actual laden weight of the Caravan must be less than its Maximum Technically Permitted Laden Mass (MTPLM)1, the new term for gross weight shown on the caravan 'weight plate'. The caravan's Maximum Technically Permitted Laden Mass (MTPLM) must not be greater than the towing car's Maximum Permissible Towing Mass (MPTW) defined by the car manufacturer."

So that contradicts Ifor doesn't it??

As far as I am aware the manufacturers plate is advisory on that figure and the only significant weight with respect to towing is the maximum train weight which will be used by the police to decide if they may prosecute you for being unsafe none the only absolute weight limit you have is you cannot tow a braked trailer weighing over 3500kg.

That is legally incorrect - silly AA
 
OK. A relief that I finally understand it. But feel justified in my confusion if AA get it wrong and just called both DVSA and DVLA and they didn't know!! Won't look anywhere else as do not want to see any other conflicting info!
