I have a 15,2 medium weight and a 17,2 TB and I'm buying a trailer as my secondary transport .

Could I get away with the 505 if I travel 1 at a time, maybe without the partition?

(505,s seem to be cheaper and far more available, plus I've got a lorry so I'm wondering if I NEED the bigger trailer?)

My 15.2 cob fits easily in our 505 so I don't think space is an issue for your little horse. I can't imagine that your 17.2 would fit in even without the partition really as the 505 is not that long. My cob takes 6 foot rugs, if your bigger horse is nearer to 7 foot rugs I would think he would be uncomfortable other than for a very short journey unless he is very compliant.

I would go for the biggest one you can afford, unless space to park it is an issue.

I have had both and preferred the 505 to tow. My 17.1 hh mw boy fits well in both, with no partition, they stand diagonally given the choice anyway. I sold the 510 to a friend with a horse that reared if loaded in anything small and he is much better in the 510 though.

If you can afford the 510 i'd go with that, always nice to have spare extra space! Plus they're always in demand as you've found out looking for one so you shouldn't have a problem if you need to sell it. Love my 510 as does my fussy loader!

505 is stated as being for the use of up to 16.2 in their info if you put a 17.2 in you will risk making your insurance invalid if there is an accident as the trailer is not being used as requested by manufacturer.

No I wouldn't put a 17.2 in a 505 it's not just the length it's the height to, and he's much too big for it, if you were only going to transport the smaller horse then I'd go for the 505.

Hmmm all really good points, thank you, I could do with trying one ... Its a bit of a luxury. having a spare trailer.. so Im tying to keep the budget down LOL (Just measured the big one, he's actually 17hh ... feels bigger though LOL

In a word, no. You would most likely put the 17 hander off travelling forever if you try to jam him into a 505. For a couple of extra hundred, you'll get a bigger trailer that is much easier to sell in future.

I even went with the 510 for mine (15.1 mw cob- wears 6ft3/6 rugs) because she used to be a bit nervous of travelling and hated loaded so wanted her to have extra space, she now actually quite enjoys travelling, loads perfectly etc! Personally I would say the 505 Is just too risky for your big one, height wise especially you don't want his head to hit the ceiling over bumps and stuff and like someone said there might be insurance problems. You can get good quality second hand ones cheap from loads of places!

I would buy a 510 and def not put a 17.2hh in anything smaller it will be cramped. You may give it a scare and then will end up with a horse that is bad to travel. Also consider if you are involved in an accident what the consequences might be from a horse being in a trailer that is too small.

My 16.3 with a high head carriage was rushed to the vets in a 505 recently. His ears skim the roof :(

The 506 has a little more headroom but if you can afford a 506 then the 510 arr cheaper!

Had the 505 and my 15'1 mare was awful to load. Got a newer 510 and she now pops straight in. I think it was the lack of space in the 505 that put her off. I didn't think it would make much differences the proof was in the loading! :-)

Definitely the 510. There used to be a 17hh horse locally that got jammed in a 505 - horse was a saint - and he travelled with his head down the whole time, when unloaded he used to tenatively stretch his head and neck up as if to ease the tension poor boy.

I've had a couple of 16.3hh horses (6'9 rugs) in 505's minus partition. They were however good travellers and would just stand at an angle . Bear in mind the lower head height though.

That said I really wouldn't fancy travelling 2 x 16.2 in a 505, very cramped.

TBH I would opt for the 510 with a 17.2, at least that way you have the option to travel both together if needed.

Another who would go for the 510 which I have , previously had the 505 which I loved but had to change up for a big youngster whose ears were touching the roof, the 510 has a much higher roof and obviously more room generally, I travel with no partition and there's lots of room for tacking up & changing
