on Ebay? Have one to 'sell' (find the best outlet for) so should it be advertised privately, sent in to a local dealer or what? Not my trailier, just looking for the best place on behalf of friends, who can't do this right now. Thanks.

second hand good condition 510 are like gold dust and will sell very easily!! Maybe try putting an advert up in local tack shop or a free website and i think it will be snapped up quickly!!

Maybe looking at the Ebay track record is not representative, then? Lots not sold. Was looking to see what price they were fetching and they weren't even going for prices I thought low. What should they be fetching if in very good condition? I was thinking a good £2500? I am not selling myself, just advising some friends.

I snapped mine up on Ebay in September for £2,500 - it's 10 years old, but had new electrics and new Alu floor fitted - thought I got myself a bargin! Mine's in amazing condition though. All the dealers I called then said I'd never find a 510 under £3.5k Hope that helps! Maybe try a dealer if it's in good condition?

I was looking to buy a 510 last year, the best deal I found was a dealer selling brand new unused 510's for around £3500.

Quite simply they have been superceeded by the 511, despite the 511 being in some ways an inferior product - flimsy catches & latches etc, but extrernally remodelled to be more in tune with BMW X5's etc, as opposed to the 510 which has more in common with the LR Discovery.

The last time I looked on the IforWilliams website there was no mention of the 510 whatsoever, indicating that they were no longer being made at all.

As a rough guide, depending upon the age and condition and whether its been regularly serviced and providing that it does have an aluminium floor, I would guess between £2-3000, but for £3000 I would expect it to be imaculate, having been stored indoors, no damage or obvious wear and tear, under 2 years old still very much with that sharp showroom look.

You can do a lot to "tart" them up, a good jetwash and scrub with an anti-bacteral/anti-fungal wash will get rid of the verdegris and mould, jet wash the interior, get the matting up if you can, put something like stable-mate disinfectant down to will kill any smells. The galvanised fittings can be cleaned up and polished with WD40, it will make a big difference.

The question is how much effort you are prepared to put into it, but be under no illusions, if it is a tired 10yr old trailer you aren't going to get much for it

Hope this helps

We recently sold ours for £3100 and it is 5 years old. It was in good condition and we sold it with a tack pack and head grill. We advertised it privately but didnt get huge amounts of interest so put it on ebay and some one did "buy it now".
After that, got 5 people contacting me about it on preloved as i forgot to write "sold" on the advert.

Some advice is, some people will try and offer you really stupid prices for them but just refuse and hold on as there is a large market for them, particualrly at the moment as show season is approaching and people want to get their hands on them quickly. In fact we sold ours for more than we bought it for 4 years ago as we bought it second hand and it was a year old for £2700 so we actually got a profit :P

I thought this, but I've been trying to sell mine for a while - 8 years old & very good condition, but have only had 2 people look at it, and they were time-wasters. Had 2 others call & make an appt to see it, but not turn up or even have the courtesy to call to say they'd changed their minds.

Put it on the HHO website, and it was supposed to be in the magazine this week, but the order hadn't gone through from the website - grrr - so hoping that it will sell when it goes in the mag next week.

Did look at E-Bay but I didn't think they were reaching their value on there.

Hanno Verian Extremely helpful and thorough reply, thank you for taking the time to compose it :) My OH says tarting up won't make a scrap of difference but to us ladies it would, so I was going to really go for it with the scrubbing. I can't see any evidence of knocks and damage, inside or out, just surface grime which has come off nicely. It's fairly new and I'll get the history when I am next in touch.

Oh to be so rich I need a trailer to go with the styling of my car!

rowy I am braced for holding out if I get the actual job of selling but will pass your info across also. We have a dealership locally, so will ring them on Monday, see what they say. I'm not looking to give it away (so am collecting sound advice as to a realistic value) and I would think the owners are hoping to get a fair price.

JennBags your reply is pretty much what I was thinking I may find. :(

Thank you everyone for your advice. I am really grateful and feel less 'out of touch' and in a position to advise if I'm asked my thoughts.

You are a fab lot, you know :)

Problem is there is more sellers than buyers and I think now trailers are more sensibly priced..up untill a year or so ago people would pay as much for a old second hand trailer as a discounted new one !!!! A ten year old trailer should be about £1500 and
the other thing a trailer is a expensive way of moving horses with the cost of running a 4X4... I think in a few years they will be a fairly rare sight....

I found it interesting reading this post as I am actually looking for an Ifor Williams HB510 and cannot find one. They are like gold dust, i cannot find any locally and people seem to want a lot of money for a trailer thats 10yrs old. I have looked on ebay and watched a couple that are mainly out of my price range, but just out of interest as to whether they sell. One was a 7yr old trailer with a starting bid of £3k, it didnt sell.

You are unlikely to adversely effect the price by cleaning it, I personally would spend the time, the only thing you will lose is an hour of your time

Depends upon how quickly they want it selling, if time is on your side then you have more chance of getting the price you want, there are always people who will pay over the odds for something, aim high, be prepared to negotiate if it doesnt go.

I have just finished the scrub-up and have found very few signs of use indeed so must be a bonus. No marks of any significance (just the discolouration around the catches) so can confidently say in very good condition! Aluminium floor, too it appears.

I shall try word of mouth and feed store notice boards first :)

I bought my 510 a year ago. I looked for ages on line but the only ones on ebay/ preloved were miles away, which I couldn't go to look at. I phoned round dealerships within 50-60 miles of me, and I could only find 1 for sale, the others all had waiting lists. Ended up paying £3600 for a 2.5 year old immaculate one from a dealership which had been fully serviced, etc. It still smelt of rubber it was that new, no wear on the tyres, etc. Looked like it had only been used about 6 times. Was more than I wanted to pay, but the ones on line I saw which were much older, further away, not serviced were going for £2800 - £3500.

Around us they sell by word of mouth - perhaps an ad in the local tack shop and pc/rc website? We ended up buying a new one (4yrs ago albeit) because there were no second hand ones.

As for trailers being a rare sight due to the cost of running a 4x4 - its the same diesel that goes in a lorry, only much less, and you don't have to pay hundreds a year to keep a trailer on the road (my friend pays £100 a year to get her lorry plated), so there will always be a market for trailers.

I have to say this occurred to me - as a horsebox owner very sorely tempted to swap back. Annoyingly, 2 out of the four I have now don't travel in a trailer

I recently sold my 510. I had it as a reserve on ebay at £2.5k (it was 8 years old but in VGC). It did not reach the reserve so I advertised on Pony Club website (which worked out cheaper than paying paypal fees etc) and I was inundated with phone calls and could have sold it 10 times over - and for the price I wanted!!! The people who bought it drove 150 miles to see and collect it!

I meant to say £1000 a year not £100!! I'd definately have a lorry if thats all they cost a year! I really wanted a box, but hubby (who is a mechanic and could service a lorry himself) said it would cost too much!

you do have to pay hundereds to keep a trailer on the road because you need something to pull it!!!! lorrys only use the same amount of fuel as a 4x4 towing, diesel is £1.35 ppl and rising!!! tax is now well over £400 a year on a post 2006 4x4 which will do about 25mpg running about at best so realisticly how many people are going to be willing to pay for one and a trailer just to go out with the horse once or twice a week when they can have a estate car that does 50+mpg and costs less to tax and maintain
and a small lorry for the horses... sales of big 4x4s are dropping so it will get very hard to find one second hand soon ... just my opinion.....

my lorry flies thu the mot and parts arnt much more than car stuff yes some are wrecks that need ££££$$$$ spending on them and some people get ripped off for servicing but the same could be said for a 4x4 they can eat money and a annual service and mot is 500+ unless you service it your self... you have to work out what suits your circumstances...for the mileage I do a lorry, and my little diesel works out cheaper...

I sold my 510 last summer for more than I paid for it ;) It was in immaculate condition though... But they really hold their value.

I have sold it through an almost 'idle' mention on Facebook! No advertising required and full asking price paid. Very happy and trailer has a lovely home.

From dreading the hassle of selling it to being a little sad at seeing it go in less than a week...

I really need an Ifor Williams 510! Just sold my lorry (broke my leg and could no longer operate the clutch). In Oxfordshire, so if anyone hears of anything, please let me know!

Sold mine via Part exchange through a dealer for £1500 last month! Was an older model with an aluminium floor and nice condition.

I understand the theory that having a trailer may necessitate having a 4x4 as an extra vehicle. However, for many of us, the 4x4 is our main vehicle as well. I have never dared to add up how much I spent on lorries, probably enought to allow me a regular change of landrover!

I recently went from having a 4x4 and a lorry to having a 4x4 and a trailer - the running costs are vastly different for me

Lorry - plating + insurance + road tax + parking at yard - on average £1750 per year

Trailer - servicing + insurance + parking at yard - £320 per year

One of the problems with having a lorry was that I tended to keep it at least three quarters full of diesel - until I kept on getting it siphoned out of the tank.

Yes I will admit that the lorry has its advantages, but then so does the trailer - so each to their own.
