I'm looking to get a newer trailer as our Bateson Ascot is quite old now. I don't think I can afford a brand new one and Batesons seem pretty rare to find second hand so am thinking about an Ifor Williams since they're common as muck ;) How much generally are second hand ones? And which ones should I look out for - I tow with a Freelander, just one horse (but would only consider a double), usually a 16hh although to fit up to 16.2hh would be sensible. Need aluminium floor (do they all have this?). I know they do a "normal" sized trailer and then one for big horses - not sure what fits happily in the usual sized one...? Am I right that there are basically 2 older versions and 2 new versions? I'd just like to know what model may suit so I can have a look around. Any ideas if it would be better to part exchange my Bateson or sell it privately (just because they are quite hard to find so I wonder if I'd get half decent money for it if sold privately).

Ifor 505 (now 504) takes up to 2 x 16.2hh.

Ifor 510 (now 514) is 6" wider, 12" longer, takes up to 2 x bigger horses.

Ifors since about 1998 should have aluminium floors and swing partitions.
Older Ifors can have wooden floors replaced with aluminium floors, and fixed partition replaced with swing partition.

Sell Bateson privately to get most money.

Older Ifor needing work (floor, wheel bearings, etc) £1100-200 (then spent £600 on it)
Decent older Ifor with some service history £1500-1800
Decent newer Ifor £2000-2200
6-year old Ifor £2500-2800

I would sell your Bateson privately as they go for good money and are very in demand, so will not be much hassle. Try towing an Ifor before buying one. I have a Bateson and don't like the Ifors at all. Older Ifors are 505 (up to 16.2hh) or the larger 510. The newer models are 506 (I think) and 511. Some of the older ones will still have a wooden floor so worth asking. Ifors are much heavier than the Batesons so you need to be careful on weight. If I was you I would either be keeping your Bateson or if you really want a newer trailer then look to replace with a newer version of the same.

The later 505 510s had aluminium floors and are far superior to the newer 506 511s, however you will need to get used to the rattling suspension lol. If you are using an ascot at the moment a 505 or 506 will be fine as they are physically similar sizes. Also they will give you more payload to play with.
There are a few batesons around. I would take a look at the EBAY one as they are offering PX

If your Bateson has boston doors I'll pay whatever you want for it! Can't get one for love nor money second hand at the moment, so frustrating.

How old is your Bateson trailer OP? I am selling mine but it is a 2003 model, with a rear ramp. Not sure where the best place to advertise is though?

I think you may find the ifor Williams a lot heavier to tow then your Bateson and if you ever wanted to take two horses you wouldn't be able to tow it with your freelander as I think the towing capacity is only about 1800k

The newer freelander's towing weight is 2000kg. Check against the trailer weights, I think off hand the larger Ifor and a large horse is maybe on or over the max towing limit.

The popular places to advertise seem to be preloved, eBay, Facebook, and NFU classifieds.

I think a 2003 with ramps sold for £2.2k a month ago, though it had recently had a new floor.
Hope that helps :).
