Thoughts?

Would a 16hh tb fit in a 505? Have seen the 505 advertised as taking 2 x16.2hh but I thought it was more of a pony trailer?

Any other ideas on really good, safe, reliable, budget trailers?

Can't help with the first question but the second one, have a look at rice Richardson trailers. They are lovely to tow, horses travel well in them and I much prefer them to ifor williams. My friend who has an ifor keeps wanting to swap!

The IW 505 was advertised (by Ifor Williams) as being suitable for 16.2hh and under , so would easily accomodate a 16hh :)

I have a 505 and travelled my 16hh tb x in it fine but unloading was an issue because its a tight turn and I had to swing back the split partition to allow his shoulders more room as he unloaded, as my ramp is on the right and he travelled on the right. I have to say I do the same for my 14.3hh Arab but no use if you are travelling two. Maybe other horses are more numble than mine......

The 505 is for upto 16.2hh
Most horses!

I had to buy the 510 as my gelding was too big for my 505.
He did squeese in it a few times though!
But as 17.2 he had to duck!

Never thought about a Rice Richardson, they always seem to look old and scrappy comapred to Ifors??

Horse has never travelled in a trailer before so I want something really nice for his first one!

My friend regularly moved her 17.3 in a 505. It was never a problem, all hers and mine back out of the trailers too, not down the front ramp.

I wouldn't pick an Ifor over just about anything. The front ramp is on the wrong side and they rattle like a b**ch. Just MO though.

I'd have a Bateson or a Rice myself. Cheval Libertes seem to be loved by anyone that has one too.

Hi

You can fit a 16hh into a 505 fine. I have taken by 17hh warmblood in one fine although I actually use and own a 510r the biggest one I could possibly get.
I would recommend them over any other trailer despite what others say. I looked extensively and I found bateson and cheval liberte to be flimsey and not in the same league as the ifor (sorry to those keen on them). RICE are ok but they felt heavy to me.

Ifors won it hands down and I really like mine - bar one person all of us with trailers at our yard have ifors and all think they are great.

Same here, we never use the front ramp, got put off after a rather wild mare we were unloading nearly jumped on top of our car!! Also if you break down on the motorway & need to unload the horses the ramp comes down the wrong side & if you always use the front ramp when it comes to needing them to back off the chances are they wont do it. Nothing worse than a horse that wont back out of a trailer, i had a long hard day at a show years ago & then got home only to have my friends horse point blank refuse to reverse out, we were there for over an hour trying to get him out, not fun at all.

navaho- you say the ramp is on the wrong side. we were discussing this the other day, about unloading into traffic if you break down. but, if you break down on a motorway, which we have done, if the ramp is on the left, you cannot put it down with crash barriers etc. the highways agency partially shut the inside lane on the motorway while the horses are unloaded and put in another trailer.

i like ifors, but i dont like 505's. i find them to narrow for bigger horses. my tb looks to have no room at all. i prefer the 510's. i towed a bateson and they travelled beautifal in them, but i find them just a little bit to light and wobble in the slightest wind. agree that ifors rattle alot.

Bateson's look nice actually although seem to be more pricey than an Ifor, although I think the rattle factor might be a concern with the Ifor, he's a tb after all, he'll interpret that as 'the death rattle' :D

Actually you have a point there, id never really thought about it like that :)

Although IW say that the 505 is for horses up to 16.2hh, it does depend very much on the horse. My friend's 16/16.1hh MW horse fits comfortably in my 505, but he doesn't travel at all well, I guess because he doesn't have quite enough space. He travels like a lamb in a 510.

So, your 16hh TB might be fine in a 505, but might not be - only way to find out is to try!
