I keep my horses in a village that is only 5 miles from my house and to get there I have to drive through one other small village and country lane.

This morning at 8.30am it was extremely foggy and as I came round a bend, right in front of me were two girls, riding two dark horses, two abreast with NO HIGH VIZ on either of them or their horses.

Rightly or wrongly as I drove past these girls I stopped and wound my window down and asked if they realised how dangerous it was to ride without any form of flourescent gear on especially on a morning like this.

I'm not even going to bother to repeat the foul language and rude gestures that I got in reply and to make matters worse, one of the horses was being ridden in tight side reins!!!

What is it with some people? With so much snazzy gear on the market thease days there is no excuse not to wear any thing hi viz. I feel people like this are selfish as they obviously give no regard for other road users. It gave me a real fright to come upon the two horses all of a sudden and I certainly wasn't driving fast or inconsiderately! Heaven knows what would of happened if they had come accross a lorry!
 
Although they were rude in return (what a shame)...hopefully it planted a seed in their heads, and they will think about getting some high vis gear for their next outing. Good on you for taking the time to stop to tell them how dangerous it was, obviously they had no idea. Let's just hope they spend a few quid to ensure their safety (and everyone else's for the future).

It must have been frustrating for you though to be responded to in such a disrespectful manner, when you were only looking out for their best interests...
 
It's the horses that I feel sorry for...along with the hapless motorists, of course. I'm afraid I would have absolutely no sympathy for riders like that, and would probably have given them an earful right back!

Unfortunately there are stupid people out there who still think it's uncool to wear hi viz. They obviously don't give a damn about their horses, themselves or any other road users. Idiots.
 
I think I look cool in my hi-viz matchy matchy! I can never fathom why people choose style over safety.

Note: H+M had a lovely range of clothes with neon yellow and pink. I got a gorgeous top which I'll be wearing when the weather warms up!
 
I think it should be illegal to ride a horse on the road with out it on the rider ie bib etc

I think insurance should be void if you are not wearing it and a hat.
