Illegal fences in warm ups

I have complained at a BE, a know it all had his protege jumping a huge oxer backwards. SJ steward lady went over and had a stern word once I had spoken to her. Being a wimp I did it right before I went in :D

That is an obvious safety risk and should not be accepted. Could they not just put the front rail of the oxer up, like normal show jumpers? :D (JOKE btw, though you do see this occasionally... touching up your horse is pretty unwise to do in public...:O )

I can't get over the cheek of them making it a bounce, its against the rules for a start did they not think they may be eliminated? As for the fences being bigger than needed sort of used to it when I go out on my own sometimes as have no choice if I have no time to get off, was a bit surprised how big some jumped for the open it was dark the lighting was fairly good but it was rustic poles saw a few close shaves:eek:

I think I would send a polite e-mail to Holly Farr who I believe organises the JAS competitions, stating what happened in a "for future reference on the grounds of safety" kind of way. It is too late for last weekend but a bounce could easily be put up on a bad distance and isn't allowed in the warm up.

We do BE, BS and PC and ALL warm arenas are a nightmare ! Too many horses in most and over height jumping going on. At BE and BS we are at the lower levels so do not want to be faced with a 1.20m warm up fence. ! Yes you can put it down when the other people are finished but in my experience they do hog it for a long time making it tricky to get your own warm up in.

If your horse needs to jump bigger in the warm up then don't be doing the 90cm/1m classes, do your schooling at home.

This weekend we took a new horse to his 1st pc sj, the warm up was total carnage, one mother putting up huge fences for a 2' 9" class, riders over horsed and then panicing about warm up jumps because they couldn't do the big fences that the mother put up for her daughter. We were only allowed 8 horses in at a time so had to get a move on. Our little chap was cannoned into 2 and whilst jumping a fence was faced with a horse out of control cantering into his landing space, jockey hit the floor and was shaken but went on to produce double clear. We didn't bother with warm up in his 2nd class and he was fab.

It does really irritate me that there are rules but they are never followed.. what's the point of them !

Nobody should hog the fence for so long others can't warm up, and I do think this is rare, changing a fence and jumping it takes 30 seconds if you know what you're doing. Usually if you're in a rush you just have to tell people that you only have X horses before you're in, and they will let you go first. I really usually find that people cooperate and are nice and when I am warming someone up and spot someone on their own, I do fences for them, and have had this done for me too. You should never have to jump a fence you're not comfortable with or compromise warming your horse up properly - you might find that people are quite helpful if asked! :)

The only time I am in a rush is if the has been a disaster on route and people are very helpful, generally,. Why do you think I don't ask. At shows I am the skivvy, quite happy to be so. We know how long it takes to warm up which ever horse we are competing so gauge it as much as we can. As I stated in my post we are competing at lower levels and find it annoying to have fences over height in the warm up. I am more than happy to put fences up or down for others that are on their own and have even picked up a few bodies but my point is why have rules if no one follows them through !

I do sort of agree with little_flea about the bs fences, but i can see morrismobs point too.

Personally, i don't think jumping the first round of a british novice or a discovery warrants jumping something at 120/130 in the warm up. I don't have a problem with a couple of holes but I think some, and i say some as in the odd few do go excessive! I think jumping a bigger, more technical, wider oxer or vertical can be useful in the bigger classes though. But either way, each to their own, and as long as they're quick and are fairly polite and sensible about it it doesn't bother me.

However I have known many an occasion when people have hogged fences (sometimes pros sometimes not! The arrogant pushy ones who in general end up going after you anyway!!) and it is annoying. It's always worse in drawn order classes and qualifiers when everyone's under more pressure, and away shows when it's rammed, but that's part and parcel of it really.

I've been both the rider and groom at BS shows and will happily alter fences for someone else if i'm waiting for my rider to jump or put things back down for someone else. You often find there's someone ready to start their warm up at the same time as you so you can pair up and jump together. Or you'll be warming up and someone will say - can i have a bigger fence i've got one to go, and i'm more than happy to let them as we often like to do the same.

I have had one occasion though when, being a groom for someone with a few horses to go, we tried to jump but everytime i put it up (being considerate for everyone else) i got a complete rollicking off another helper and she kept putting it down - rider ended up going in a bit cold and turned out the other competitor went after us!

Building illegal bounces and stuff isn't fair though.

I was at the Merrist Wood JAS and happened to hear the man who put the bounce up tell someone that he had done it 'when the warm up was empty'! I did wonder when that could possibly have been. I agree that possibly an email to Holly would be a good idea. The JAS team do such a fab job of organising between very few of them. I can't believe the hours they put it, but still stay calm and reasonable. There have been such huge entries this year. Trouble is there is always someone who will be really inconsiderate and spoil it for everyone else. On Sat there was also a girl on what was obviously on a very young horse, while the warm up was quite busy. She was asked when going in what number she was, and she muttered that she was 'ages to go'. It was pretty obvious that the horse was not about to do a novice JAS. She promptly got bucked off when she tried to canter and the horse ran loose. Luckily the other horses in there at the time were quite sensible and all coped ok, but I felt it was very antisocial in a small, busy warm up.

I like small confidence building fences when warming up, and am sometimes on my own. People warming up as you describe Little Flea can make it pretty much impossible for me to warm up over a fence at all. All I want is to jump the practice fences at the height of the competition a half dozen times to get my eye in. I can spend most of my warm up waiting for people who are jumping significantly higher hogging the warm up by jumping incessantly over bigger fences.
It does my head in tbh.

Did anyone actually say to the offenders that it was against the rules and not to do it? Maybe they didn't realise?

Sometimes it's best to confront people rather than try and get anyone else to sort it out.

this.
i took me youngster to a 2ft6 the other day on my own,and someone had the practice fences up at at least 3ft 6. how am i supposed to build up confidence at that?complete waste of time. why do people insist on jumping that much bigger than the class?

i thought that BS you could actually jump up to 1.10 for a BN class warm up? something like that anyway...sure i saw it in the rules somewhere? might be making it up mind
i have no problem with people putting the fences as big or as wide as they like but it would be helpful if they didn't hog them for 2 hours and had a look round and check that there is someone to put them back down if they are leaving...if everyone did that then warm ups wouldn't be too bad :D
