A person I know is offering her box and car as a trucking service to shows etc.
The box does not have a double braking system nor is it licensed (it is in fact a rebuilt box). She however does not advertise this when people ask her to truck.
My questions are:
Is this legal?
What repercussions would the box owner have if something were to happen?
Would your horse insurance pay out if something were to happen and you did not know the box wasn't licensed?

You have to have a Defra Licence to provide horse transport.

If doing under 8 hours you will have a Type 1 licence and you will have to have an CET certificate as well to show you are competent at doing this.

Also if the trailer and vehicle is over 3.5t then an operators licence is required as well.

It is not legal otherwise.

Trading Standards is your first port of call for this person

In answer to your Horse Insurance question, one of the things that will be asked would be for the DEFRA licence etc of the horse transport used.

I do know of a couple of cases where 'illegal horse transport' has been used and horses have been seriously injured and once the Horse Insurance company gets to know, they will refuse and refer you to their terms and conditions where it will stipulate in their wording what they deem as legal horse transport.

I do urge you to report this person to trading standards and to Animal Health in Carlisle. You will need the persons number plate that they use.

You can also inform VOSA and they will put the number plate in their ANPR system and this will trigger their cameras

Good luck and hope you can either convince this person to get legal or to get off and stay off the roads!
