i am posting under an assumed name as i know there could be retributions if people from my new yard saw this post

i have just moved my horse to a new county and a new yard and its great, good grazing, rides, etc, but the yard use a farrier (i would also be expected to use him) who is not qualified or registed, (also therefore not insured)

horse was just shod befiore i came so is not due for a while but am worrying about what i should do as i dont want to be using this man.
i am looking for another yard which will let me use the farrier of my choice which is unfortunate as my horse is already unsettled by the move

what measures should i be taking?
 
No yard should stop you using a farrier of your choice anyway. Although you may be expected to attend your own horse if you bring in your own farrier.
 
i think ym might get a bung i dont know lol

now theyve got me here things arent quite what i thought they were going to be, local yards are full am going on a waiting list asap
 
oh my god that is so bad!!! and totally illegal!!!

get him reported immediately! the mind boggles at the damage he could be causing! :S
 
Just call your farrier? I've never heard of a yard not letting you use your own farrier before. I'd be livid.

Or just another thought - do you have a frined on another yard where you could take your horse to?

i dont have my own farrier now, ive just moved, home is 3.5 hours away by car

no friends either, not met anyone yet, got chatting to a woman on a horse this weekend, in a desperate-i-dont-know-anyone kind of way turns out she was on a long distance hack lol
 
i must admit i am worried about retribution if i do report him, hes not the kind of person id want to get on the wrong side of not to speak of the other liveries YM YO if they find out it was me, id be lucky if it was only my windows were caved in tbh

Is he definately not registered?

They don't need to have done the usual apprentice route to be registered, especially in highlands in islands there were different registration requirements, right up to 2007.


From the Act "3) Subject to section 15 of this Act, a person shall be entitled to be registered in Part III of the register if he applies for registration before such date as may be prescribed and satisfies the Council by means of a certificate by a practising veterinary surgeon, which shall be in the prescribed form, or by such other evidence as the Council may in his case consider appropriate, that during any period of two years before the date of his application for registration he has regularly and competently

(a) carried out the shoeing of horses belonging to himself; or

(b) otherwise than by way of trade or for reward carried out the shoeing of horses belonging to other persons.



I'd check with farriers registration council before you do anything!
 
he's definately not registered loobyloosme, the other liveries were telling me about him and while he was there i chatted to him and in a round about wasy got on about it and he didnt qualify (so not heresay, his own admission), the liveries dont mmind because he only cahrges £30 for a set of shoes it all seems a bit of a laugh and nothing to be concerned about
 
He is giving the rest of us a bad name

oh and those liveries will be held just as accountable in a court of law for using him as he is for malpractice.

Report him to the FRC they will not take it lightly
 
I know of a yard that has used an unregistered farrier for 20 odd years. He's been 'banned' (haha like you can be when you're not registered) and fined etc loads of times, but just carries on as normal. He's a scumbag and a bad farrier in general and not even good with the horses, but he's cheap so they keep him. Doesn't seem to be much can be done? Again, whoever reported him was a braver soul than me, he's a dodgy sod.

OP i'd move yards as i would want to be somewhere where people understood the importance of the insurance issues etc and looked out for their horses welfare a bit more. Good luck with the waiting lists, hope you can find somewhere soon. In the meantime maybe if you spoke very nicely to some of the other yards nearby they will let you use somewhere to get your own farrier out. Maybe they will need a small financial persuasion....
